We will arrive at the city and take a guided tour around El Palmeral de Elche. It is an historical date palm forest, the biggest in Europe with over 200,000 trees. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000 and is representative of a unique Islamic farming system (8th-9th centuries), designed as an oasis for crops.
VALENCIA - PALMERAL DE ELCHE - TABARCA
Departure from Valencia (Pantera Rosa and Nuevo Centro) to Elche.
We will take a walk and then reach Huerto del Cura, an emblematic botanical garden spanning 12,000 m2 located in the centre of Elche, declared a National Artistic Garden in 1943. It is home to the famous Imperial Palm Tree, along with centuries old palm trees, cacti, ponds and exotic species.
Following on from the visit, we will head off to Santa Pola, just 15 minutes away by bus. From there, we will take the Ferry to Tabarca Island (a 25 minute boat trip). On arriving at the island, we will eat the typical Tabarca dish par excellence in a local restaurant, known as “caldero tabarquino”, a traditional seafood stew served in two dishes: rock fish with potatoes and homemade garlic mayonnaise, followed by a creamy rice cooked in the highly flavoured stock left over from the first dish.
We will spend the afternoon on the smallest inhabited island in Spain. We can stroll around the streets or enjoy the coves. Return trip by Ferry to Santa Pola, and then on to Valencia.
