Do you want to know how to clean a leather bag? Don’t give it up as a lost cause! We’ll teach you how to get rid of all types of stains and leave it looking new.

Leather bags are always a good investment. Elegant, durable and very comfortable. However, it’s important to know about basic care to ensure they always look great and prevent them from deteriorating.

What products do I need to clean a leather bag?

The products required to remove stains from a leather bag depend a lot on how dirty it is and the type of stain.

The first thing to bear in mind, especially if it has been stored for a long period of time, is ventilation. Open all the zips and pockets and allow the leather to ‘breathe’. Once the smell has gone, it’s time to get to work on the stains.

  • Superficial stains: simply wet a cloth with water and rub gently using circular movements until the stain disappears. You can also add a little neutral soap.
  • Mould stains: we recommend using ethyl alcohol  or vinegar and water. Its composition makes the stain disappear more easily.
  • Oil stains: apply talcum powder so it can absorb the oil fully. Then brush and voilà.
  • Loss of shine: if, despite being clean, you notice your bag has lost its shine and the leather looks dry, apply a moisturising cream. It’s as simple as that. Spread it across the entire surface of the bag and you’ll notice a difference when it’s been absorbed. There are also products specifically for leather that work really well.
  • Extra shine: to return the shine to your bag so it looks brand new again, a tip that works very well is to apply a little furniture polish to the surface and spread it with a dry cloth. Then leave to dry and you’ll see how shiny it is.

And for an everyday clean, nothing beats baby wipes. They are free from alcohol and abrasive products, so the leather won’t get damaged. They work really well!

Can you clean a white leather bag?

Of course you can, you just need some egg white. Yes, you heard right. Separate the yolk from the white, whisk the white thoroughly and apply it to the stain using a cloth.

Once dry, clean it off using a woollen cloth and the stain will have disappeared. It’s that simple!

Cleaning a leather bag inside

We often forget about the inside of our bags and lots of dirt builds up inside too. To clean a leather bag inside, use a damp cloth with neutral soap. Wipe the whole of the inside surface and then remove any residues with a clean cloth. Leave to dry and voilà.  You can also use baby wipes, this works wonders.
