Food safety

Ensuring freshness, quality and food safety in Consum products is key for the Cooperative, which is why we have once again renewed our ISO 9001:2015 certification issued by AENOR, and which certifies the Quality Management Systems of the Fresh, Refrigerated and Frozen plants, and guarantees a monitoring of all processes and exhaustive product checks.

The Cooperative has strict food safety criteria governing the evaluation of suppliers who produce our own-brand products, which require an IFS, BRC or ISO 22000 certificate issued by independent entities.

Healthy and sustainable products

Innovation, health and sustainability are the foundations on which the Consum product range is built. In 2021, the Consum brand extended to 2,033 products - 13.4% of the total products on sale - which are constantly improved through the participation of customer partners and workers in the validation of their quality and design. The global product range exceeded 15,200 items.

The range of organic products has continued to expand in all sections - fresh, food and non-food - reaching a total of 330 products, of which 66 fall under Consum's own brand, ECO, whose packaging has been revised to make it more sustainable.

Progress has also been made in animal welfare, and 100% of fresh meat sold at counters and in pre-packaged trays now has this certificate. With regard to free-range eggs, the Cooperative offers free-range and organic eggs (code 0 and 1) in all its supermarkets, representing 54% of the products on offer in this section. Consum continues to work with its suppliers to fulfil its commitment to sell only free-range chicken eggs from 2025.

In 2021, the formula of 21 Consum-brand items was modified, as part of the NAOS Strategy, incorporating new ingredients with optimum nutritional values. New gluten- or lactose-free products are also being progressively incorporated, to the tune of 229 gluten-free products and 253 lactose-free ones.
