Types of perfume: fragrance varieties
Explore the different types of perfume and their fragrance varieties. Find out how to choose the perfect scent for each occasion and personality.
Type of fragrance according to essential oils
There are numerous ways to classify perfumes: based on their notes and olfactory family, according to their accessibility and exclusivity, or by their concentration of essential oils.
- Fresh water or eau de cologne: usually have a concentration between 3-5% and sometimes up to 7%.
- Eau de toilette: with an approximate concentration of 12-15%.
- Perfume: with a concentration of about 17-20%.
- Extract or perfume: with a concentration of essential oils of around 30-40%.
The concentration of essence affects how long the fragrance will last after being applied. However, there is no single rule for how long it will last, as it also depends on the type of notes used, as some are more volatile than others.
When we hear the term ‘eau de cologne’, it may not be referring to the concentration, but rather to its ‘cologne’ notes; that is, a fragrance that shares the olfactory notes of a traditional eau de cologne, similar to the scent of Jean Marie Farina’s 1709 version, inspired by the Aqua Mirabilis from Cologne, with a formula of oranges, lemons, bergamots, flowers, and fruits. The name comes from the city of Cologne, Germany. That’s why, in perfumery, the term ‘colognes’ is not commonly used as a generic term, but rather ‘perfumes’ or ‘fragrances,’ since ‘colognes’ are associated with a fresh citrus or herbal formula.

Types of perfumes according to their olfactory notes
- Floral: are the most popular in the perfume industry. There is a wide variety of flowers used in perfumes, such as rose, jasmine, lily and gardenia. These scents tend to be feminine, romantic and elegant. Ideal for an important event or a date.
- Woody: evoke the scent of wood, moss and roots. They are intense, deep, warm and masculine, so they correspond to strong personalities. They are particularly suitable for cold days. Woods such as sandalwood, cedar and vetiver are used.
- Cyprus: mixes fresh, light notes with a deep, earthy base.
- Oriental: evoke the smells and tastes of the Orient. They are warm, sensual and sweet, but also intense. They are best reserved for the autumn and winter season and for special occasions. They may include spicy notes such as vanilla, cloves, cardamom and frankincense.
- Fruity: are fresh, ideal for summer, because they are more difficult to alter and are very long-lasting. They are often combined with florals and are ideal for romantic, elegant and sensual spirits.
- Citrus fruits: generally correspond to eau de cologne. They are light and soft, perfect for everyday and summer wear. Citrus aromas are refreshing and energising. Orange, lemon, bergamot and grapefruit essential oils are used.
- Gourmand: are very sweet, almost edible. They are reminiscent of a cake or a sweet. You can find notes of chocolate, caramel, vanilla, almond and coffee. But they are also warm, which is why they show their full potential in autumn and winter. They are perfect for lovers of sweet and comforting aromas.
- Musk: most perfumes contain musk, also known as musk, because it acts as a fixative to make the perfume last longer. However, only a few perfumes feature this note as the main element. It is a very intense synthetic scent that mimics the odour of the glands of a deer found exclusively in the highlands of Tibet. These perfumes have welcoming, vital and very intense scents. For this reason, they are usually blended with delicate scents like jasmine or ylang-ylang to soften the ‘wild’ presence of the musk with more subtle floral aromas.
Body spray
Also known as body mist, it’s much lighter than cologne and perfume, and can be sprayed all over the body and even hair. While perfumes offer a wider variety of scents and intensity, this product is typically fresher, citrusy and more summery.
With virtually no alcohol, this spray is perfect for spraying on the body during the warmer months, as it not only perfumes, but also moisturises and refreshes. Its concentration of essential aromas is only 5%, which is why the body mist is more watery and lasts for a shorter time.
