Hair and nails are parts of the body that reflect our lifestyle. Our diet, level of stress, lack of care and other external factors such as the cold, humidity and pollution weaken our hair and make our nails more fragile and brittle.

How can we solve this? A balanced diet, healthy lifestyle and including daily exercise in our routines undoubtedly play an important role. The most important thing though is to work from the inside, and there are specific vitamins to help do this.

When should we take vitamins for hair and nails?

  1. Vitamin A: this vitamin helps our immune system to work properly, to regenerate cells and to maintain tissue. A lack of vitamin A can cause dry hair. Milk and cereal products are excellent sources of vitamin A.
  1. Vitamin B: this vitamin helps to regenerate the tissues that are responsible for hair and nail growth. It also prevents hair loss and confers a more natural, vivacious, shiny look. It is found in green vegetable leaves.
  1. Vitamin C: this vitamin speeds up production of collagen, a substance that is in charge of making our nails and hair grow more quickly. Citrus fruits are an excellent source of vitamin C.
  1. Vitamin D: this vitamin is produced by our bodies when we are exposed to the sun, conferring shine and strength to our hair and nails.
  1. Vitamin E: this vitamin contributes to increasing the amount of oxygen entering our cells, and it therefore improves circulation to our scalp, facilitating growth. Food such as nuts and vegetable oils are natural sources of vitamin E.
  1. Vitamin H, or Biotin: this vitamin prevents hair loss and prolongs hydration, preventing split ends. Although there are many hair products containing biotin today, taking specific food complements for hair and nails is usually more effective.

Did you know...

  • On average, everyone has about one million hairs on their heads. These hairs are made of keratin, a fibrous protein that enhances hair growth. Slow growing hair could be due to a lack of some micronutrients or vitamins in your diet.
  • Nails are also cells that harden because of keratin and protect the sensitive skin that they cover. They sometimes become weak, and can even break due to a poor diet.
