How to separate clothes to put on a washing machine
We tell you how to separate the clothes before each wash so that they come out impeccable. Discover our tips and tricks.
After using your washing machine, have you had any unexpected surprises? Maybe a garment has shrunk, or the colours have mixed, or the garments have come out very wrinkled.
To avoid unexpected surprises, there are two things you should always bear in mind:
- Read the manufacturer's instructions specified on the garment label.
- Separate the clothes before you put them in the washing machine.
What relevant information will you find on the garment label?
- Washing cycles.
- Possibility of ironing and/or drying.
- Wash temperature.
- Garment fabrics.
How to classify garments before washing
- Separate clothes before washing them according to how dirty they are. Normally, cloths, rags, socks and delicate underwear usually get dirtier. If they have stubborn stains, use a stain remover or a specific detergent indicated for the pre-wash.
- Sort the garments according to the fabric composition. To be sure, read the label. Once you have identified the garments, choose the most suitable wash programme for them: synthetic garments, delicate garments, cotton and mixed garments...
- o Separate them by colour. Very important! If we don't want our clothes to get spoilt by absorbing the colours of others, separate them into dark clothes: blacks, blues, greys; and light colours: pastel tones, beige, ecru...
- o For new, non-prewashed garments, wash at a maximum of 30º to prevent fading.
- o It is advisable to wash white clothes only with clothes of this colour, not even with other light colours. In this case, it is advisable to choose 40-60º wash programmes, but do not forget to consult the label beforehand. You can include a washing additive to enhance the white, it will look like you are wearing your clothes for the first time.
- o What about the rest of the colours? You will also need to separate them by colour intensity. And, when it comes to garments with prints, checks, or stripes, it is better to wash them with the coloured garments.
- o Pay special attention to delicate garments. It is advisable to turn them inside out or use fabric bags when washing them.
Finally, don't forget to empty out the pockets, and turn garments with zips and buttons inside out to avoid damaging the fabrics.
