Post-Christmas detox plan

In January our bodies need a rest from the Christmas excesses. The amount of sugar we eat can have very negative effects on our health in the long-term, hence the need to look after ourselves better after those Christmas calorie binges. If you want to get back to your usual diet and easily detox your body, take note of these tips:

  • Dietox: get back to a healthy eating routine. Have five meals a day, start using wholemeal and skimmed ingredients, eat a lot of fruit and vegetables and forget about microwave meals, which contain a lot of saturated fats, and skip fried food, it’s healthier grilled, roasted or steamed, and drink lots of water. Green tea with lemon can also be useful because of its detoxing effect.

  • Eat protein: protein plays an essential role in tissue-building for growth and maintaining muscles. Moreover, eating proteins makes us feel more sated, which helps to avoid getting the nibbles between meals, and also reduces cravings for sweets. Tuna, chicken or turkey breast, salmon, eggs, lentils, edamame, tofu or sardines are all good examples of protein-rich foods.

  • Have a light evening meal, and if possible eat fruit with high water content such as pineapple or watermelon. This will help to purge your body much more quickly, and you will not feel hungry because of their sating effect.

  • Drink some detox shakes. They are the perfect ally to help you shed those extra pounds. DIY. Teatox can also help you: it is made from natural herbs and leaves, such as field poppies, which are good for cleaning the colon and are digestive and diuretic. Rose Hips are rich in vitamins A and C, which help to reduce inflammation of the skin.

  • Say no to temptations: if you’ve still got some chocolates or biscuits left over, give them away, or use them in another recipe until you finish them... That way you won’t be tempted to nibble on sweets throughout January.

  • Don’t eat between meals: that is why it is important to have 5 meals a day. Go for fruit, detox shakes or tea with your mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks.

  • Water has to become your best friend when drinking: drink two litres of water a day to keep hydrated and to eliminate toxins.

  • Sleep between 7 and 9 hours a day: rest during the night is fundamental. You will burn off more calories and fat without even realising it.

  • Exfoliate your skin while you are at it: the skin on your face and your body. At the same time as we clean our body inside, we should also clean the outside to eliminate dead skin cells.

And don’t forget to exercise: even if it is only walking for half an hour a day, getting your body moving is fundamental to burn fat and for a healthy heart. January is a good month to stick to your resolution of signing up to some sport. Get on and do it!
