The definition of declutter is to simplify or remove unnecessary items, etc. It would be like organising by eliminating the unnecessary, i.e., a 3 in 1: tidiness, cleanliness and "goodbye to mess".

For many people clutter and chaos generate anxiety. Summer and the time before we go on holiday is the perfect time to consider doing a general check of everything we don't need, that takes up space and clutters up our home. In conclusion, have a more minimalist life and eliminate everything we don't need.

Benefits of decluttering

To move to the decluttering side, we must be convinced that we are going to get rid of things, so sentimentality is not valid. Things are things. They can be donated, given away or sold.

Making room and space in our house and in our life, in general, is beneficial for our physical, emotional and financial health, as it will allow us to:

  • Have less cleaning to do, so we can use that time for ourselves and our hobbies.
  • Less things to tidy up, we will make more use of the hours of the day, and we will be able to dedicate more time to things we care about and want to do.
  • As everything will be tidier, we will not suffer from the "anxiety" of having to keep everything put away and tidy.
  • Have less debt, since, as we need fewer things, we will consume more responsibly, and this will lead us to use credit cards or take out personal loans less frequently.

How to get started in decluttering

  1. Every day we will remove something we have at home that we don't use, big or small. If we do this exercise every day, at the end of the year we will have got rid of 365 things that we didn't need as much as we thought. We can give it away, donate it or throw it away if it is not in good condition.
  2. 5 minutes a day tidying up somewhere in your home. This will help us to establish a routine for tidying up spaces that we had abandoned.
  3. We will check the wardrobe, and every time we put on a garment, we will turn the hanger round. In that way, we will know which garments we don’t wear so often, and they will be ready for us to get rid of them. If we haven’t worn a garment in a season, it is time to get rid of it.
  4. We can also use the four-box method. We take 4 large boxes and classify them into rubbish, donate, keep and relocate. And we go room by room in the house adding all those things or elements that we no longer use. This may take days, weeks or months, but it will help us to see how many items we really own, and we will know exactly what to do with each item.
