In this article, we are going to tell you how to arrange the dishwasher make the most of the space. Don’t miss out on all our tips!

If you are the one who, more often than not, has to put the dishwasher on, keep reading because in this article we are going to explain how to optimise  your favourite space in the kitchen and get the best results in each washing cycle.

Although it may seem simple, arranging the dishwasher correctly calls for technique and organisation, as we don’t usually put on the dishwasher after every meal and there is a method to knowing how to arrange each of the elements after each use so that the end result is a tidy and efficient dishwasher.

  • Load the dishwasher from back to front and from bottom to top. With this technique we can make space for each type of dish according as you use tableware.
  • On the bottom tray, arrange the dishes by groups of size, leaving the bigger ones at the back of the dishwasher to avoid blocking the sprinkler that sprays the hot water.
  • Leave some space on the lower tray for saucepans, pots or large bowls.
  • Cups, glasses, mugs and small bowls should go in the upper tray, as well as plastic Tupperware or airtight containers. The highest temperature are reached in the lower part of the dishwasher, so by putting them on the upper tray, you avoid their melting or warping.
  • Another thing to keep in mind is that saucepans, glasses, cups, mugs and bowls should always be placed upside down.
  • Cutlery should be placed in their basket or in  a third upper tray. Do not leave them loose.

How to arrange cutlery in the dishwasher

Place the cutlery in the basket. There must be a gap between the cutlery so that the water can move freely and washing can be done without problems. There are specialist dishwasher technicians who advise mixing the different types of cutlery in each section of the basket. However, others advise grouping each type of cutlery in one of the designated compartments of the basket.

In the case of the knives, place them upside down, with the handle upwards, to avoid cuts and pricks when removing them and to avoid the water that accumulates in the bottom and get the handle to dry better.

In the event that the dishwasher does not have a cutlery basket and has a third tray at the top, place the cutlery according to type, in the same direction so that more fit and washing is more optimal.

What not to put in the dishwasher?

  • Kitchen knives. Though dishwasher safe, it’s better not to put them in the dishwasher. Wash them and dry with a cloth to prevent rust and for good blade maintenance.
  • Golden cutlery. This type of cutlery gradually loses its colour if it is washed in the dishwasher due to the high temperatures reached.
  • Non-dishwasher-safe tableware with metal rims. For the same reason as cutlery. They gradually lose colour, and the metal rims are erased and/or become detached.
  • Cast iron or nonstick frying pans. This type of pan should not be put in as high water temperatures and drying can affect the non-stick layer. In addition, it helps prevent rust.
  • Although they may have been specially treated to be dishwasher safe, you are not recommended to put wooden cutlery in the dishwasher because they end up getting spoilt sooner.
  • Glass jars with labels. Make sure to remove the labels before putting them in the dishwasher, as otherwise they will end up in the filter.
