Promoting local development makes your shopping more sustainable
Ensuring those around us progress alongside us, improving the local economy and people's quality of life - this is what it means to be cooperative.
Proximity
98.8% of purchases came from national suppliers, of which 65.9% come from local suppliers in the autonomous communities in which it operates. Consum's business activity is estimated to generate more than 41,500 indirect jobs, mainly as part of its supply chain and for service contractors.
With the purpose of promoting fairer, more balanced and more loyal relations along the food chain, since 2016 Consum has adhered to the Code of Good Commercial Practices in Food Contracting of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA).
The Cooperative is committed to local production. Among the most outstanding commercial campaigns in terms of local produce, Consum's support for local citrus growers particularly stands out, with the cooperative selling only oranges and mandarins with the Protected Geographical Identification (PGI) 'Valencian Citrus' in all its supermarkets in the Valencian Community during the campaign.
Logistics efficiency
Consum continuously drives new projects to improve the logistical efficiency of operations. In 2021, a project was developed to incorporate artificial intelligence into predictive models, using Machine Learning to simulate expected sales per store, item and day.
One of the Cooperative's most significant logistics projects is the Transport at Origin (TEO) project, by which produce is collected directly from the supplier, thus optimising time frames and guaranteeing control of the cold chain, achieving cost efficiencies to the tune of around 8.9 million euros in 2021.
Another is the TEO/Nodriza programme, which enables suppliers to unload all merchandise at a single Consum distribution centre, instead of having to distribute it separately to various hubs. Consum then regroups products from different suppliers and transports them to the rest of the centres. This results in an environmental saving of more than 8.3 million kilometres of transport to the tune of 3.5 million euros.
