How to use cosmetics to give volume to your lips
If there is one product that is omnipresent in our daily makeup routine, it has to be lipstick. Although pink and nude tones are used, red is an all-time favourite.
Apart from choosing between either a gloss or matte finish, we require a lot more from our lipstick: long-lasting, rich in colour and good cover, in-depth moisturising for our lips, and while we're at it, why not some extra volume. Right? In short, what we want is an all-in-one lipstick.

1. Cleaning and exfoliating our lips every night
Is an effective remedy to increase their volume and to give them a “healthy” look. Therefore, first remove any makeup with specific products that hydrate and do not dry out our lips. Then apply some Vaseline to your lips and gently scrub them with a toothbrush in small circles. This will get rid of any bits of dry skin you may have.
2. Moisturise them with cream
As is the case of our feet, our lips should also be included in our daily moisturising routine. Try not to forget about them!
3. Lip balm and lipstick
There are heaps of these cosmetic products available on the market to cater to all needs to add volume to our lips and moisturise them, and they are also adapted to different budgets too.
- With a long-lasting matte product, we will not only be nourishing our lips, but we will give them extra volume too. Even though they have a matte finish, since they are nourishing, they will not dry out our lips.
- There are also “slim” products that make it easier to apply our lipstick more accurately, making them look fuller with just one coat.
- Gloss effect lipsticks make your lips look fuller. Moreover, some of them are enriched with densifying hyaluronic acid spheres and oils that help to make our lips smoother and more attractive.
- With a mirror gloss finish, we get extra moisturising for our lips thanks to the fluxing hydra-gel core with its “top coat” effect in the middle of the lipstick.
- Improving definition that lasts for hours: there are lipstick formulae that stand the test of time and leave us with a well-moisturised feeling, particularly those with a gloss finish. They usually have a creamy texture and activate our natural lip moisturising mechanisms. Some are in the form of gems that also help to define our lips.
- Those that include gems in their formula, such as tourmaline, a mineral used in jewellery making which helps to achieve a long-lasting, rich, bright colour throughout the entire day, give extra volume.
- In pencil format, as if it were a thicker liner: usually with a long-lasting velvety finish, highly nourishing, thanks to the vitamin E and emollients for a very creamy texture, easy to apply ensuring our lips do not dry out and chap for hours and hours on end.
- UV protector with mirror effect: these lipsticks nourish our lips in depth and protect them from UV rays. Some of them include a special combination of waxes which help us to spread them much more easily around our lips.
- With light diffusing pigments, which confer extra gloss, and consequently making our lips look much fuller after applying them.
- Lip varnishes are the ones that cover our lips the best, melting into them, although most of them tend to dry our lips out. To avoid this, some of them contain oil emulsified in water for extra moisturising, and soluble pigments, glycerine and a layer of gloss that helps to make our lips shine.
- Tingling effect filler: designed to confer volume, hydration and nourishment with a juicy finish, an instant tingling sensation as the effects of filler technology start to work.
- There are also vegan and cruelty free lipsticks: made from liquid formulae with a stick applicator which does not transfer colour. The matte colour and hydration of the matte finish last for up to 12 hours after drying, thanks to the hyaluronic acid spheres.
Application tips: when and how

- Keep your lips hydrated and free of any dry skin before applying lipstick.
- It can be applied before leaving home, starting around the edge of your lips and then filling in the rest. This will ensure your lips are properly defined, and will confer volume and hydration.
- Gloss finish lipsticks make our lips look fuller.
- Matte lipstick defines them better, but our lips will not look as full.
- Touch-up during the day whenever required.
- Finally, clean off your lip makeup every day and moisturise them well.
The best cosmetics to give volume
Practically all cosmetic brands include lip balm and lipsticks with some of the effects described above. You will only need to find the one that best adapts to your needs and pocket. However, they tend not to be the cheaper products.
