Scouring pads have become a common feature in Spanish homes. We usually use the same one to clean frying pans, plates, glasses, cutlery and any other kitchen utensils. But that is a very common mistake. There are different types of scouring pads, and the most usual way to classify them is by their colour.
- BLUE: More gentle cleaning, and the one we should use the most
- GREEN: More heavy duty cleaning
- STEEL OR BLACK: Very heavy duty cleaning to get rid of the most stubborn dirt
- SCRUBBING BRUSHES: For the hard-to-reach corners
Uses of green fibre scouring pads
Green scouring pads (with yellow or green sponge) are the most common type. Green scouring pads are considered the strongest and usually have two sides: one is a sponge to clean kitchen utensils and glassware, whereas the other is the abrasive side, which is used to clean fat off the bottom of pans, basically where the dirt that is hardest to remove is found.
The green fibres provide heavy duty cleaning action that easily gets rid of fat, dirt and any other residue. Scouring pads with a sponge combine the cleaning action of the pad and the gentle cleaning action and absorbing power of the sponge. They are ideal for cleaning delicate surfaces and to get rid of stubborn dirt without scratching.
Uses of blue scouring pads
Blue scouring pads are usually used for gentler cleaning on surfaces such as stainless steel or vitroceramic where not any product should be used.
They are also ideal for applying soap to the dishwasher door and inside the oven, as they will not scratch and damage the surfaces. They are also very useful for cleaning cutlery and glassware.
Uses of nail saver scouring pads
Nail saver scouring pads are very useful to get rid of the most stubborn dirt without damaging the surfaces. Their strong, long-lasting design make them ideal for heavy duty cleaning in the kitchen and bathroom.
They are very resistant to abrasion and keep their shape and texture, even after very prolonged use.
Use of stainless steel scouring pads
Soap-filled scouring pads or stainless steel scouring pads are very useful for extra heavy duty cleaning of burnt-on food remains. They are also very good for cleaning the undersides of frying pans or grill racks that you are unable to get clean with green scouring pads, such as those in the oven or air fryers.
Scrubbing brushes with stiff bristles are also very useful for cleaning without scratching, and make it easier to clean those hard to reach corners.
