Eyeliner types according to your eyes
Discover which types of eyeliner suit your eyes best. Discover the shape of your eyes and make the most of them with our tips.

Applying eyeliner is something we do nearly every day, because it is one of the most basic steps in makeup. Although all women line their eyes differently and use different pencil types according to their preferences, it is true that not all the ways we can line our eyes have the same result on everyone, as this will largely depend on the shape of our eyes and eyelids, and some can look better than others. Add to this the wide range of eyeliners on the market, and also how easy they are to apply to our eyes.

How to know the best way to use eyeliner for the shape of my eyes?
- Round eyes. If we have round eyes, a more almond shaped lining is ideal to enhance them. Any type of eyeliner will be ideal, but it will depend on how skilful we are when applying it.
- Eyes close together. To achieve a separating effect for our eyes, we should start the line in the middle of the upper eyelid and draw it outwards to make our eyes look further apart.
- Eyes with visible eyelids. With this type of eyes, the ideal line is to draw from the tear gland along the entire eyelid to the outermost part. When we get to the end, we can extend the line straight out or upwards, according to our tastes.
- Eyes with hooded eyelids. In this case, if our eyelids cover our eye sockets, we need to start the line from the middle of the eye, and draw a thin line level with our eyelashes so that it doesn’t fold with the eyelid. When we reach the outside of the eye, we should draw the line with our eyes open so that the fold doesn’t distort the shape of the line.
- Eyes with droopy eyelids. As is the case of hooded eyelids, it is best to draw a very thin line level with our eyelashes. If we have droopy eyelids, we should apply the eyeliner with our eyes open to guarantee it will be visible and not hidden by our eyelids. We should start drawing the line from the outer corner towards the centre.

What types of eyeliners are there?
- Eyeliner pencils. Pencils are the most widely used type of eyeliner, since they can be used to draw lines on our eyelids and also to blend in level with our eyelashes and mark a water line, unlike other types of eyeliner. We can also create shadows and a smoky look with this type of eyeliner pencils thanks to their creamy texture.
- Gel eyeliner. Gel eyeliner usually comes in a small jar and we need a bevelled brush to apply it properly. It is very practical and easy to use. Furthermore, its texture makes it perfect for less experienced people who don't have much practice, because it can be corrected.
- Eyeliner pens. These pens are ideal for bold, intense lines. The tips of these eyeliners are usually very fine, but we can use them to draw a thicker line if that is what we want to achieve.
- Liquid eyeliner. These eyeliners are similar to pen eyeliners, but in this case a brush is used to apply it. The eyeliner is much more liquid than gel, and so you will need to apply it very accurately and it does require considerable experience. Unlike the gel eyeliner, there is not much margin for error, since it dries fairly quickly.
- Rollerwheel eyeliner. These are the latest eyeliners on the market, and are not widely used. They are also known as “pizza cutter” eyeliners. They are ideal for drawing very thin lines level with our eye lashes and are very practical.
