Types of faces and how to enhance them with makeup

When applying our daily makeup, knowing about your face structure is important so that you can achieve the required effect and enhance or disguise certain features of your type of face with foundations in pale, darker or highlighting shades. Let’s take a look then!

1. Round shaped faces

Round shaped faces are the most common types, in which the angles and width of the face are in balance. They are characterised by gentle contours, without any sharply defined angles.

  • How can we enhance this type of faces? To enhance the contour of your face, darkening your temples a little and diagonally marking your cheekbones with a darker corrector or tanning powder is recommended. We also recommend not spreading blusher in the middle of your cheeks, but rather blending it upwards.

2. Oval shaped faces

Oval faces are considered one of the most endearing face types, since they are also well balanced. They are characterised by being longer than they are wide, with the wider part being the upper part of the face.

  • How can we enhance this type of faces? Since we are dealing with very harmonious face types, focus on highlighting your cheekbones, the arch of your eyebrows and bridge of your nose using a stick highlighter.

3. Square shaped faces

This face type is characterised because the width of the chin and forehead are practically the same, and also because of them having a prominent jaw, which tends to harden the rest of the features.

  • How can we enhance this type of faces? Makeup should try to lengthen the look of your face and soften your features. To achieve this, you can use a paler foundation, corrector and highlighter in the middle part. Use a darker shade around your face and blend in some cream blusher from the middle of your cheeks towards your ears. That will achieve a look that will change the dimensions of your face.

4. Rectangular shaped faces

This type of face is similar to square faces, with the difference being that they are longer than they are wide.

  • How can we enhance this type of faces? You can darken the area around your forehead and chin, and then strategically apply some highlighter to enhance your cheekbones with the aim of making your forehead look shorter.

5. Hexagonal or diamond shaped faces

Hexagonal or diamond shaped types of faces are characterised by having very prominent cheekbones with respect to the forehead and jaw.

  • How can we enhance this type of faces? To achieve a more balanced look on this type of face we recommend using pale coloured makeup, such as corrector and highlighter on your chin and forehead, and darker shades such as stick or powder tanners around your cheekbones.

6. Triangular shaped faces

Triangular shaped faces are characterised by having a narrow forehead, prominent cheekbones and a wide jaw.

  • How can we enhance this type of faces? Use a foundation that is a paler shade than the colour of your skin, and then use darker makeup to shade in from your forehead to your chin describing a “3” shape using a brush. Enhance the lower part of your jaw with a highlighter, and apply some blusher to the top of your cheekbones.

After applying makeup to your face, it is now time for the fun part:  applying some colour!
