Split ends: the best tips and products
Have you got split ends? In this article you will find the best tips to avoid them to flaunt beautiful, shiny hair.
How to avoid split ends?
Split ends are a symptom of damaged hair. They are one of the most visible signs that your hair is not in perfect condition. Our hair is subjected to daily aggression from frequent brushing, drying, hair tongues, dyes, etc., and it therefore gets damaged, which is more visible on the parts furthest away from the roots, i.e. the ends. Fortunately though, there are different ways of avoiding damage:
- Protecting our hair from heat by applying heat protection before using the hairdryer or tongues. Limiting the use of the hairdryer, drying it at room temperature or allowing our hair to dry naturally, the latter being a highly recommended option.
- It is also advisable not to brush our hair while it is still wet, because that is when it is most delicate. We recommend using conditioner or styling cream, without rinsing it off, to make brushing easier.
- Choose a good brush and start off by entangling the ends. We should always untangle our hair before washing it.
- Hydrating our hair is fundamental, as this will help to avoid the ends splitting. Apply a hair mask after shampooing your hair (once or twice a week) or use conditioner.
- Serum is also advisable in these cases, as is hair oil on the ends, to keep moisture in and to avoid the ends splitting. It should be applied at the end, always when or hair is dry or after washing.
- Keeping to a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water is fundamental. Our hair is a reflection of our lifestyle, and a healthy diet will lead to healthy, shiny hair.

What is splint ends repairer and what is it used for?
It is interesting to know that products are available to repair split ends once they have split, without having to resort to scissors to trim them. They are treatments that can be applied to wet or dry hair which hydrate the ends of our hair, gradually improving their appearance. We do need to persevere though, and combine these treatments with the others that we described above to be able to see the results.
You will be able to find different products to repair split ends and improve how they look and, of course, to prevent them from splitting further. Split ends repairers are one of the hairdressing products that are most widely used on a daily basis. There is a wide variety of treatments: ranging from serums to seal the ends (smoothing and rebuilding split ends to leave a silky finish), sprays that strengthen hair fibre, restructuring gels and hydrating creams, which will all undoubtedly help you have more beautiful, healthy hair.
How often should you trim the ends?
You’ve probably asked yourself that question, since it is also one of the best known solutions to repair your hair fibres, and to get rid of damage and other hair problems such as dehydrated hair. It is important to clarify that the frequency of trimming the ends does not affect the speed of growth of your hair. The result is quite the opposite in fact, since your hair will grow back stronger and healthier, since by trimming the ends you are actually completely getting rid of all the damage. Specialists usually give us the following recommendations for trimming split ends:
- Going to the hairdresser every 3 months if you want your hair to grow healthy.
- On the other hand, it is a good idea to trim the ends every 2 months when using dyes regularly or other products that can damage your hair.
- Finally, if you take good care of your hair and frequently use specific masks for hair fibres, heat protectors or other suitable products, you will only need to cut your hair once every 4 to 6 months, providing that you don’t get split ends earlier.
