Ideal hairstyles for New Year’s Eve

So you don't know what to do with your hair to see the old year out? Loose or tied up? Here are some ideas for you to hit it off this New Year's Eve, with the hairstyle that best suits you.

It is a well-known fact that our hairstyle, either because of the cut or the way we wear it, can enhance our features, and it can also mask some of the features we would prefer not to draw attention to. The first thing though is knowing what shape our face is, since depending on the shape, one look or another will suit us better.

  • Diamond-shaped face: narrow forehead and narrow chin, with wider cheekbones, making our face look wider at this point, giving it a more rhombus appearance. Hairstyle: one that gives volume to the upper part to bring out your features, such as the “blunt bob” which is basically short hair that is not layered with slightly uneven ends. To give it a more elegant touch, but one that is fun, you could make some gentle waves.

  • Long-shaped face: in which our features are narrower, with small cheekbones that tend to be high, and with little muscle formation. The chin is usually angular and the forehead is longer. Hairstyle: avoid long hair without volume. The style that will best favour you is a cut at the height of your chin, such as a “bob crop” with the parting to one side, and if you have thin hair, you add some waves from the roots for more volume.

  • Square-shaped face: a wide, prominent jaw that is practically the same width as the cheekbones. Proportionally, these faces look the same width and length. Hairstyle: a fluffy, mid or long hairstyle to soften your features and to break up the symmetry. One tip is to part your hair to one side and then add some gentle waves from the middle to the ends.

  • Triangular-shaped face: like an inverted triangle, the forehead is wider, while the cheekbones and jaw taper off. Hairstyle: to set off these more angular features, a “short bob” with some curls and centre parting, with large, well-defined curls from the root to give volume will work well.

  • Round-shaped face: the length and width are similar, although the features are rounded and gentle, lacking any striking features. Hairstyle: an asymmetric “long bob”, straight, shoulder-length hair, or even long hair with a side parting.

  • Oval-shaped face: this is considered to be the most harmonious face shape, in which the forehead and chin are narrower, and the cheekbones are wider, but always well proportioned and balanced. Hairstyle: any casual style with a “tousled” look to give volume to your hair. You could choose tight ponytails or buns with no loose ends, but back-combed near the scalp so that it looks loose and free. A ponytail with your hair pulled away from your face, but playing with a small toupee for volume near the fringe.

We recommend other more simple looks that are sure to be a great success on that magical night:

  • Waves with a jewellery accessory: if you have a mid-length haircut, brushing your hair to one side and adding a jewelled hairpin on the other side near to your ear will give it a distinctive touch. The waves should be from the middle to the ends.
  • Straight, wet-look: for short and long hair. This consists of sweeping your hair back tightly and applying a wet-look product to it.
  • Glam wave on one side: a wavy style all in the same direction with a side parting. The wave falls elegantly towards our face, with a polished, high-shine finish.
  • Partly tied back with plait: plaits from the roots are ideal to tie back part of our hair, however long it is. We can wear them to one side, letting our hair fall free. But we can do it on both sides too, with a slight toupee.
  • Partly tied back from the top: a schoolgirl type ponytail like the ones our mothers used to do, fairly tight, but only at the top of our hair, with a surfer-wave touch to give our hair more volume and flow, without reaching the ends.
  • Baby braids: this nineties look is back again and can come in different forms, like next to our face, in the middle of our head, in the shape of a tiara.

Go for tied up hair this New Year's Eve

  • Low bun: this is always a safe bet and can be adapted to the occasion. For a more elegant look, make a centre parting pulling your hair tight to finish in a bun at your nape. If you are looking for something a bit more casual, brush your hair straight back keeping its natural volume but leaving it looser. In fact, you could also leave some loose locks around your face and finish off by tying it up at your nape.
  • Ballerina bun: brush your hair back and tie it in a low ponytail at the height of your crown, with all your hair back and a centre parting. When you have made the ponytail, twist it around and roll it round a hair band before fixing it in place with hair clips the same colour as your hair and then apply some hairspray.
  • Braid bun: we can make this bun by braiding our hair and then twisting the ends around to make different shapes with the bun.
  • Very high buns: we can leave two long locks of hair as if they were antennae near our face, and then to give it a more modern look we can give it a wet look finish.
  • Pammy Updo or Pamela Anderson updo: a deliberately tousled high ponytail with loose wavy locks of hair and a fringe to frame our face.

New Year's Eve hairstyles for curly hair

  • Tousled tie-up: this is ideal for curly hair. Brush your hair with a centre or side parting, but leave some locks of hair near your face. The key to this style is for the curls to fall from above, meaning the ponytail has to be from the crown. Then pull your hair apart using your hands and arrange the curls in a circle, holding them in place with hair clips so that the curls hold the shape we intended and stay in their place.
  • Natural loose curls, well defined, like back in the 80’s.
  • A low ponytail with some loose locks or a messy bun with a hair pin as the showpiece.

Simple, but stylish: elegant ponytails for New Year's Eve

  • High pony tail: a classic from the 70’s that is still very elegant. If your hair isn’t very long though, you should add some extensions. You could also plait your hair.
  • Low ponytail: this looks good on everyone. You can wear it tousled and casual or tight and gelled down. The key though is the volume and density of our ponytail. If you have a long fringe, leave a few locks loose for a more natural finish.
  • Bubble ponytail: to achieve this ponytail, we divide our hair into sections using hair bands or bows to form “bubbles” along the length of our ponytail.
