Orange peel skin: what is it and how to avoid it

What is orange peel skin?
Orange peel skin is a localised disorder of the skin mainly on buttocks and legs, which is the result of a build-up of subcutaneous fatty tissue between collagen cells. This tissue forms lumps that eventually stand out causing the appearance of orange peel, and hence the name.
How to get rid of orange peel skin
Although getting rid of orange peel skin is not easy, we are going to suggest a few simple tips that if they become a habit can help you reduce it. Take note!
Exercising
Get to it! Sedentary lifestyles are a key factor in the appearance of orange peel skin. This is because it contributes to poor blood circulation and lymphatic insufficiency, which means the system works slowly and toxins build up in our bodies. Take note of the exercises that can help you get rid of orange peel skin!
- Cardiovascular exercises: These will help to strengthen your heart, to improve control of blood sugar and to burn off fat easier, just to mention some of the many benefits. They include many activities such as: swimming, running skipping, and lots more.
- Functional training: This will help improve our mobility, agility, balance, cardiovascular health, correct our posture, tone our muscles and burn off localised fat more easily. Some of the best exercises to reduce orange peel skin and cellulite are: squats, step-ups or bridges, just to name a few.
Anti-cellulite massage
This is key to fight off orange peel skin, consisting of a combination of massages and anti-cellulite or reducing creams.
- Massages: Massaging is very important to activate circulation and soften the lumps caused by this skin disorder. You can work on the problem areas with special brushes designed for these massages, with glass suction caps for vacuum massages, and of course by using your own hands. Useful tip! When massaging it is important to apply pressure in an upwards direction (from bottom to top).
- On the other hand, anti-cellulite creams are designed with ingredients that improve circulation and enhance the firmness of your skin, but for them to work properly you need to have had a massage beforehand, thus allowing them to penetrate your skin more easily. In the long-term, anti-cellulite products improve the appearance of your skin, but they do not help reduce volume... You can only achieve that through a healthy diet and exercise!

Healthy diet and lots of water
A balanced, healthy diet is always fundamental, but to get rid of orange peel skin it is also important:
- To reduce the amount of salt, sugar, flour, alcohol or sweetened drinks that you consume, and of course eliminating all ultra-processed foods from your diet, that do not provide any nutritional value.
- To increase the light proteins you eat, such as fish or poultry, and to eat fruit and vegetables. When fighting orange peel skin, we recommend increasing your intake of diuretic foods, such as artichokes, asparagus or pineapple, just to name some. Try combining them in a smoothie or detox shake!
- To increase your intake of water, ideally this should be 2 litres a day.
Nutricosmetics or phyto-therapy
To fight fluid retention and to stimulate collagen production,phyto-therapy can be a big help. Phyto-therapy is the science that studies the use of medicinal plants and their by-products for therapeutic purposes. Discover all the dietary complements that can help you fight against orange peel skin here! But this should always be under the supervision of a health specialist or nutritionist.

Specific body treatment:
Although orange peel skin and cellulite are skin disorders that affect aesthetics, many women decide to have specialist aesthetic treatment that promise to improve the appearance of their skin. These treatments include diode laser, cryolipolysis, ultrasonic cavitation or radiofrequency treatment.
