Having a newborn baby always leads to uncertainty about what to use and what not to use. Sometimes, there are even different theories about the benefits of using certain products.

In the case of baby wipes, it has been proven that these products are a must in our baby care bags for changing nappies, and even for cleaning young children. So which baby wipes are best for each stage?

Wipes for newborn babies: Which ingredients should be avoided?

Babies usually have very delicate skin, which is why we should avoid using certain products on their skin to avoid irritation and serious harm every time we change their nappy.

Therefore, we need to pay attention to baby wipes, making sure they do not contain ingredients such as:

  • Parabens. Parabens are considered endocrine disruptors. Some more than others, but in general we should avoid using this type of product on babies and young children.
  • Perfumes and fragrances. They are used to make products smell nice, and are very common in cosmetics. Sometimes though, they contain ingredients that are not suitable for sensitive skin, ranging from essential oils to synthetic ingredients such as phthalates.
  • Alcohol. Alcohol causes irritation on sensitive skin.

How to use baby wipes safely and effectively

Baby wipes are used for cleaning and hygiene when changing nappies, and as such we should only use them for that purpose on our babies. They are designed with a neutral pH, similar to human skin, and in particular the delicate skin of babies in order to avoid irritation and dermatitis.

We should use wipes without fragrances or alcohol, making sure they are suitable for sensitive skin.

Moreover, they should only be used externally. If they are used internally, they can alter the natural pH and bacterial balance of intimate areas.

We should not overuse them either. It is best to combine them with soap and water.

If we do notice any irritation, we should stop using them immediately and check with the doctor.
