If you are starting to use makeup, or it is just something you like but you’re not up-to-date, we have all the advice you’ll need. You don’t need to have multiple makeup bags stuffed full of products for an easy, simple, cool makeover. We’re going to tell you what you actually need, and how to use it properly.

Tips and advice on makeup for beginners

  • Choose light products with a natural finish. It's best to choose neutral and matte colour tones, at least until you get the techniques right anyway.
  • Don’t buy too much or one of everything. There are products that require a lot of practice before you can use them properly. Choose the basics that you can manage easily. There'll plenty of time to start innovating later on.
  • Take your time in front of the mirror to apply your makeup, and don’t get disheartened. Only by practising every day will you learn a routine and then be able to apply your makeup quicker as time goes by.

What makeup products should beginners buy?

Foundation and corrector

We recommend you start with BB Cream  or makeup foundation if you need it to cover more. If you choose, makeup foundation, try to make sure it is medium coverage and buildable. If you have oily skin, you will need a matte foundation to remove the shine, but if you have dry skin, go for a moisturising foundation. For your corrector, make sure you choose an anti-dark circles to make sure those bags under your eyes don’t give you away.

Highlighter and blusher

Starting off by adding touches of light to our faces by using blusher is one of the first basic steps, along with a highlighter and tanner. Choose a coral shade or pink to give your cheeks more bloom. If you prefer though, you can leave the tanner for the second stage, but apart from making your face look better, tanners are also useful to create depth.

Eye shadow palette

Neutral colours will be your best allies at this stage. Buy a palette of earthy colours or taupe, which is always a safe bet, and you will make the most of it as time goes by. We recommend leaving the fantasy or bright colours for later on, once you've got the hang of the basics.

Eyeliner

Although we may be tempted by liquid eyeliners, we recommend starting off with a black eyeliner pencil to line our eyes, the traditional way. You should preferably choose a creamy one to spread it better. Bear in mind that pencils are more manageable and if you make a mistake, you can clean it off easier than liquid eyeliner. When we are confident using the pencil and if black suits our eyes, we can move on to other products to line our eyes.

Mascara

Take your time to comb and separate your eye lashes. It will make all the difference and define your look. Mascara is indispensable for daily makeup, enhancing the way our eyes look. You can start off using a classical mascara if you are worried about staining your eyelids, or you could use a specific mascara for added volume or density if you want to enhance and separate your lashes more.
