Eye makeup is not just a matter of trends or fashion: it should enhance our eyes according to the colour of our iris and harmonise with our face and the colour of our skin. Due to their unique colour, grey eyes require certain special tips that enhance their shine and depth. If you would like to find out how to make the most of them, both for daytime makeup and a night-time look, here is a practical guide. Let’s take a look at it!

Makeup for grey eyes: discover the shades that suit you best

Have you ever applied makeup to your eyes to match the colour of your clothes? If you have, you need to know that it is one of the most common mistakes in makeup. That is because, when it comes to eye makeup we need to pay attention to three fundamental aspects: the features of our face, the tone of our skin and, of course, the colour of our eyes. This aspect is fundamental when choosing an eyeshadow because, depending on the colour of our iris, there are some colours that suit us better than others.

Being a variant of the colour blue, grey eyes need shades with a cool or blue undertone, which should to be within a similar colour range to your eyes. Therefore, all shades of black, grey, green, blue, aquamarine, mauve, white or silver are ideal for grey eyes. But steer clear of bright fluorescent and coppery colours!

Makeup for grey eyes: step by step

Here's an all-round makeup method that will work for both day and night:

  1. Moisturise your face well with your favourite moisturising cream and apply some sunscreen, both in winter and summer. Discover the importance of applying sunscreen all year round here.
  2. Apply the right makeup foundation for your skin tone. This will help you to even out your skin tone and cover any imperfections such as scars, blemishes or those dreaded spots. Apply the right blusher for your skin tone too. Don’t you know how to do it? We are leaving you some tips for spectacular cheekbones here.
  3. Choose a long-lasting eyeshadow and spread it over your eyelids. Remember that makeup colours for grey eyes should have a cooler undertone. We recommend that you use a lighter shade of green, blue, aquamarine or mauve during the day, and leave the darker shades of grey, black or silver for the evening. After applying your base shadow, if you want to add depth to your look, apply a darker pigment shadow around the eye hollows in an inverted C shape.
  4. Next, at eyelash level, outline your eyes with eyeliner. If you want to give your look a bolder touch, colour the waterline of your eye with a black eyeliner.
  5. Curl your eyelashes with some mascara and … voilà! You now have your makeup for grey eyes.

Daytime makeup vs. night-time makeup for grey eyes

Paler, smoother colour tones that light up your eyes without overdoing it are ideal for daytime makeup. We mentioned it earlier, but it is worth remembering:

  • Mint green, sky blue, aquamarine or pale mauve eyeshadow will be the best colours.
  • Avoid fluorescent and coppery colours that could take the focus away from your iris.

At night, you could try with bolder colours for more depth and dramatic effect.

  • Dark grey eyeshadow, black or silver, applied to your eye hollows in an inverted C for a smoky eye look.
  • Use a black eyeliner to outline your eyes and curl your eyeslashes using mascara for a more sophisticated finish.

Lipstick for grey eyes

Eyeshadow is not the only important part of your makeup; the right colour lipstick can enhance the look of your grey eyes. Some recommendations:

  • For an everyday look, nude, pale pink or corral shades will keep the balance and let your eyes stand out.
  • For an evening look, choose deep reds, burgundy or plum, for an elegant, sophisticated contrast.
  • Avoid colours that clash with colder shades, such as some orange colours which are too warm and break the harmony.

Applying makeup to grey eyes does not have to be difficult. Choosing the right colours for the time of day and your look, combining them with the right shades of lipstick and applying some simple techniques with your eyeliner and mascara will be enough to enhance the intensity and depth of your eyes. Following these tips and adapting makeup to your personal style is sure to help you achieve a striking, harmonious look, whether during the day or at night. Go for it!
