Cleaning the oven with baking powder and vinegar is an effective, environmentally friendly way to get rid of the most stubborn stains from our ovens. Keeping the oven clean is essential as it will help ensure good maintenance, our oven will last longer and we will be able to use it whenever we need without having any problems.

We will also avoid any effluent containing toxic products that are detrimental to our health.

Step by step guide to cleaning your oven with baking powder and vinegar

Before starting, we should prepare the following items:

  • Gloves
  • A basin with hot water
  • Baking powder
  • A clean microfibre cloth
  • White or cleaning vinegar
  • A scouring pad with a sponge (the sort that do not scratch)

The first thing to do to clean the oven is:

  1. Fill a basin with a couple of glasses of hot water and add two tablespoons of baking powder. We will see how the powder dissolves quickly to make a paste.
  2. Before starting to clean the oven, remove any racks and trays from inside and set them aside to clean separately when the oven itself is clean.
  3. Scrub the entire inside of the oven using this coarse, exfoliating paste. The aim here is to loosen the burnt-on dirt, and at the same time we will be disinfecting the oven.
  4. Using the moist microfibre cleaning cloth and the scouring pad, we scrub the baking powder paste over the entire inner surface of the oven. It should all be properly coated. We can always make some more paste if we don’t have enough.
  5. As we scrub the paste on, we will see how the baking powder changes colour. That is a normal process as it absorbs the dirt from the inside of the oven.
  6. We should leave it on for several hours to allow it to work. In fact, we can leave it on overnight to allow it to work, and clean it off the next day.
  7. After letting it work, we remove the baking powder using the moist cloth and scouring pad. We wet the sponge in hot water and scrub over the baking powder.
  8. To finish off with, we prepare a bowl of hot water and vinegar to remove the paste and finish cleaning the oven.
  9. To clean the oven racks and trays we apply the same mixture of water and baking powder and allow it to work for 15 to 20 minutes, depending on how dirty they are. We then use the scouring pad to get rid of any dirt and fat remains.
  10. If the oven is not spotlessly clean after this process, we can repeat it in the areas where the most stubborn dirt has not been removed.
