How to make waves with a hair iron: Natural and perfect
In this guide we tell you how to make waves with a hair iron so that they look natural and perfect.
Discover the most common mistakes and how to get the most out of your iron.

Wavy hair gives us a more glamorous look, and offers us a way to change our aspect without changing our tone or hairstyle. They are the perfect alternative to putting our hair up when we want to prepare for a special occasion, or simply look different. Here's a 6-step guide to making waves at home with your hair iron:
1. Brush your hair well. You can spray it with a heat protector to protect it, or with a specific spray if you want to add texture and volume at the roots.
2. Divide your hair into two sections and secure the part you won't be working on with a clip. Separate a strand. Bear in mind that the more hair you have in the strand, the softer the wave and the more casual the finish. If you do it with very little hair, the wave will be much more marked, and your hairstyle will be much more defined.
3. Wrap the strand around the iron up to a few centimetres below the roots. Turn the iron outwards, placing it in upright position; use the cable as a guide, it must be facing upwards. Hold for a few seconds and slide it down. It is important for you to make a full turn downwards.
4. Take the next strand and use the same technique, but the other way round, i.e., turning the iron inwards. Alternate the two directions on all your hair to achieve a more natural look. Make sure you turn the iron outwards for the strands that frame your face.
5. Once you've finished all the strands, let your hair cool down a bit and open up the curls with your fingers as you like. This step makes the difference between over-styled hair and a 'carefully unkempt' finish.
6. Apply hair spray and your waves will last longer. This step is especially important in high humidity areas such as coastal areas. A good tip is to apply it from above as far away as possible and spray it down onto the hair.
Most common errors when waving hair with an iron
-
Making waves only at the tips
For the texture of the hair to be similar and the waves not to look artificial, it is advisable to start the wave from the roots or a little lower, not using the iron only at the tips. The higher you start to form the wave, the more natural the result will be.
-
Leaving the hair iron for too long
If you want curly hair, leave the iron on your hair for longer, and the wave will be more pronounced. But if you want to achieve a more natural style you'll only need to leave it for a short time.
-
Making all the waves on the same side
If we don’t alternate the direction of the iron, the result will be more artificial and the naturalness of the waves will be lost. You don’t have to alternate them one by one; it is better to vary so that the effect is more casual.
-
Separating strands always of the same size
It is preferable to work on strands of different sizes to make the look more natural. If we always choose strands of the same size, the finish will be too calculated and will be very artificial.
