How to disinfect the doormat
Would you like to disinfect the doormat at home and don't know how to do it? We give you some tips to remove accumulated dirt and bacteria from the mat.
The doormat is the first barrier to prevent the dirt on our shoes from entering our home, so it is very important to keep it clean and disinfected, and more so in times of coronavirus.
To keep our mat in good conditions, the first thing we must do is find out what material it is made of, since, depending on the material, we can use some products or others.
We can find the following types of mats on the market today:
-
Made of natural fibres, the most common are coconut mats.
-
Made of synthetic fibres.
-
Made of plastic material.
-
And those that are similar to carpets we have in the home, which we use indoors.
Disinfectants for mats
The first thing we must do is vacuum the mat, whatever the material is. Once vacuumed or swept, we can put it in the bath to clean it with an ammoniacal solution diluted with water and soap. We will take a strong bristle brush and rub the entire length of the mat with the solution we have prepared. Afterwards, we will wipe it with a damp cloth with water to rinse it, and let it dry in the open air for at least 24 hours or until it is completely dry.
This would be the most common way of cleaning natural, synthetic fibre or plastic mats. Indoor mats, on the other hand, can be washed in a washing machine without any problem, following the manufacturer's instructions.
Once cleaned, we can apply any disinfectant suitable for household fabrics. We can even spray it a couple of times a day so that when we come in from outdoors, the soles of our shoes come into contact with the product, and we avoid entering with dirty shoes.
