Nowadays we give more importance to looking after ourselves and our health, with a fundamental part of this being skincare, the part of our body that is most exposed to the environment and the elements, and caring for it is even more important if we have sensitive skin. What do we call sensitive skin? Any skin that is intolerant and reacts to external agents in a way that is different than normal. If that is the case with your skin, you need to know what treatment routines and products your skin will tolerate, and which ones you should avoid.

Looking after sensitive skin.

Starting off with our cleaning routine, it is always preferable to shower with warm water rather than hot water. Use syndet type shower gels (i.e. those with synthetic detergents) which will clean your skin without altering its protective barrier or ph. To clean your face you should use micellar water or other specific sensitive skin cleansers.

Dryness weakens our skin and makes it more sensitive. Therefore, good hydration a couple of times a day on our body and face is essential, without forgetting our usual face routine with light textured creams containing antioxidants.

On the other hand, whenever your skin is exposed to the sun, we recommend using cream with solar protection, particularly in summer.

For exfoliation, choose natural enzymatic exfoliants that imitate natural skin exfoliation, as they are less aggressive. We recommend exfoliating once every two weeks.

How to look after mixed sensitive skin?

Mixed skin is the name we give to skin that is dry in some areas and oily in others. To care for this type of skin, we recommend facial cleansing using products containing salicylic acid, as this helps to reduce the build-up of sebum and unblocks our skin pores. To hydrate your skin, you should use non-comedogenic, water-based products, since they do not cause imperfections such as blackheads or spots.

Exfoliation is also important for mixed skin, since it can help remove any excess of oil and flaky skin, although we should always take care since if we overdo it, our skin will try to offset the dryness by producing more oil. As a general rule we should exfoliate our skin a couple of times a week.

How to look after oily sensitive skin?

This type of skin is characterised by our sebaceous glands producing an excessive amount of oil, leading to shiny skin on our faces. If our skin is also sensitive, we will see redness, itching or peeling too.

As in the previous case, we need to follow a good skincare routine before applying any specific treatment, such as good cleansing and moisturising

Not all cleansers are suitable for oily sensitive skin. Therefore, we need an effective product to work against impurities, the best option being soothing micellar water.

As is true for other skin types, exfoliation is also important, at least once a week, particularly in summer, to keep our pores clean from any dirt and oil. You can use an exfoliant containing golden algae for this, which will leave your skin free of impurities and visibly healthier.

Finally, light solutions containing ultra-soothing products and nutrients that do not excessively dry out or highlight our skin are ideal for oily sensitive skin.
