Hiking routes in Sierra de Gúdar

For anyone looking for outdoor activities, the Gúdar-Javalambre Trail Network offers over a thousand kilometres of waymarked routes, ideal for hiking. Here are some of the most notable options to explore:

  • Vía Verde Ojos Negros: Spain’s longest greenway, connecting Teruel with Sagunto along the former mining railway of the Sierra Menera. Perfect for hiking or taking a mountain bike out for a ride.
  • Camino del Cid: a cultural and historic route inspired by the Cantar de mio Cid and the figure of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar. The Sierra de Gúdar section, known as ‘The Conquest of Valencia,’ passes through Teruel, Castellón and Valencia. Key towns along the route include La Puebla de Valverde, Mora de Rubielos, Rubielos de Mora, Nogueruelas, Linares de Mora and Mosqueruela. Along the way, you can discover medieval castles, fortified farmhouses, high-mountain landscapes and other historical landmarks.
  • Ruta de los Guerrilleros: this trail honours the various guerrilla movements that took place in the area throughout history, particularly during periods of conflict. It winds through ravines, pine forests and charming villages, making it ideal for thematic hiking that combines storytelling with the beauty of nature.
  • Camino del Santo Grial: A cultural and pilgrimage route that follows the path of the Holy Chalice to Valencia Cathedral. In the Gúdar area, it passes through Barracas and continues via Caudiel, Jérica, Navajas and Segorbe before reaching Valencia. The route is divided into seven stages, which can be completed gradually throughout the year. Its main attractions are the landscapes of the Calderona and Espadán mountain ranges, historic monasteries and religious heritage.

Towns and viewpoints you cannot miss

Near the Sierra de Gúdar, you can visit the charming towns of Rubielos de Mora and Mora de Rubielos, Valbona, Sarrión, and Linares de Mora. For a mix of urban and rural experiences, the city of Teruel is also worth a visit.

If you are looking for viewpoints to enjoy the area’s stunning vistas, we recommend:

  • Mirador de las Estrellas de Gúdar: Located in the town of Gúdar, this is ideal for stargazing due to its low light pollution.
  • Mirador de la Peña de La Magdalena: Situated above Gúdar at 1,629 metres, on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Alfambra valley. It offers spectacular panoramic views of the valley and the Sierra de Gúdar. The site is also historic, as it was once home to an 11th–12th century Islamic castle, with archaeological remains and the Hermitage of Santa María Magdalena.
