Complete guide to cleaning burnt microwaves

The microwave cleaning process is very easy, providing that we make sure we clean it on a daily basis, since there will be less to clean and we will spend less time and less effort than if we have to scrape of several days’ worth of dirt to leave it sparkling clean.

You can choose between the homemade methods using the products you already have, or specific cleaning products for household appliances. Homemade products are the usual things we have around the kitchen such as baking powder, which are perfectly safe for our health as they do not contain any harmful chemicals that could irritate our skin or cause allergies. We are going to provide some simple steps for cleaning burnt food off the microwave:

  • We should start off by unplugging the microwave to avoid any nasty surprises.
  • Use a sponge, kitchen roll or a cleaning cloth moistened in hot water with a few drops of washing-up liquid. Wipe off the soap using moistened kitchen roll and finally dry the surfaces to ensure moisture does not remain inside the appliance.
  • Fill a microwave-proof receptacle with water and a dash of vinegar and then turn the microwave on at full power until the water boils. When the water boils, switch off the microwave and allow the steam to work for around 15 minutes.
  • Then remove the receptacle from the plate and wipe down the inside walls of the microwave using a sponge moistened in lukewarm water to clean off the dirt and food remains.
  • If some stubborn stains still remain afterwards, moisten some cotton wool with acetone or nail varnish remover and wipe the stain. Then clean with a clean, damp cloth to remove any of the product that may be left over.
  • If this does not work, you can always try some microwave cleaner as an alternative, which you will be able to find at any supermarket.

Perfect products to get rid of unpleasant smells from the microwave

  • White wine vinegar

This is one of the best options to get rid of bad smells from the microwave after food has burnt. Take a bowl and half fill it with vinegar. Then place it inside the microwave and heat it for 5 minutes. The properties of the vinegar neutralise the bad smell inside the appliance.

  • Baking powder

Once again, baking powder is one of the products that we can use to clean off any remains in the microwave that can cause it to smell bad.

Mix two spoonfuls of baking powder in a cup of water. Then use a brush to apply the mixture to the inside surfaces of the microwave. Whichever of these options we decide to use to clean the microwave, we need to make sure we wipe off any remains and moisture using a dry cloth afterwards (especially if we use baking powder).
