Applying lipstick may seem like a simple matter at first sight, but achieving a perfect finish requires skill, precision and a few tips. We are going to give you a step-by-step guide to applying lipstick for a professional finish to enhance your natural beauty.

How to apply lipstick and keep inside the line?

Preparation

  • Exfoliation: Use a lip exfoliant to get rid of any dead skin cells and leave the surface perfectly smooth. You can make a homemade exfoliant by mixing sugar and honey together, or you can buy a specific lip exfoliant.
  • Hydration: Hydrate your lips using lip balm. This will prevent you lips from cracking or splitting and will help your lipstick last longer. Make sure the balm is properly absorbed before you move on to the next step.
  • Apply the primer: Apply a lip primer to make the colour brighter and last longer. It works as a foundation, evening out the surface and improving adherence of the lipstick.

Lining

  • Lip liner: Choose a lip liner the same colour as your lipstick or one that is slightly darker. It will define the outline of your lips and keep the lipstick inside the edges.
  • Technique: Line your Cupid’s bow (the part in the middle of your upper lip) and then the corners before eventually joining them along the edge of your lips. If you want to create more volume, you can apply the liner slightly outside of your natural line, but without going over the top.

Filling in

  • Application: You can apply your lipstick directly or use a brush to be more accurate. Start from the middle of your lips and work outwards, making sure you cover the whole surface uniformly.
  • Layers: For a brighter, longer-lasting colour, apply one layer of lipstick first, then gently press your lips on a paper tissue to remove any excess before applying a second layer.

Final touches

  • Concealer: For a cleaner, more well-defined finish, use some concealer around the edges of your lips. This will also help to correct any smudges or mistakes when lining your lips.
  • Setting powder: If you want your lipstick to last longer, apply a layer of setting powder over the top. So as not to spoil the colour, place a paper tissue over your lips and apply the powder over the tissue.

Extra tips

  1. Choose the right colour tone: Find the tone that best suits the colour of your skin. Red and burgundy shades are a safe bet for everyone, whereas nude tones and paler colours leave a more natural look.
  2. Discover different finishes: There are several lipstick finishes: matte, satin, gloss, just to mention some. The matte finish is elegant and long-lasting, whereas gloss confers more volume and a juicier look.
  3. Lip care: Lips that are well cared for are the base for all lipstick. Make sure you keep them well hydrated and protected from the sun
