What happens if we don’t clean our drains properly?
One of the main reasons for cleaning drains is to avoid them getting damaged and blocked. Proper maintenance of drains in the home will mean that they will work properly for a long time. If we clean our drains on a regular basis, we will avoid solid waste building up which cause blockages, and therefore the need to call in drain cleaning services to unblock them.
Furthermore, regularly cleaning the drains in our home will avoid lime scale from building up in the pipes, which can lead to serious problems. It also avoids germs, bad smells and cockroaches.
How to clean drains step by step
We are going to describe how to clean the drains in your home step by step:
- Last thing at night is the best time to do this so that the product we use has all night to work.
- First pour some boiling water down the drain. This will make cleaning easier, and if there are any solids in the drain it will help unblock it.
- Then pour in the specific drain cleaning products following the manufacturer's instructions.
- By using a manual plunger we will be able to help unblock the drain.
- If we are cleaning the bathroom drains, we will need to clean the trap which is usually in the floor of our bathrooms. Put on a cleaning glove and remove any waste.
Tips for cleaning drains
We can also employ preventive maintenance by using products that are more environmentally friendly. You can use vinegar and baking powder, which not only prevent lime scale from forming in the drains, they also disinfect and clean them, avoiding blockages and bad smells.
- Put some water in a saucepan and bring it to the boil.
- Meanwhile, put half a cup of baking powder in the drain hole.
- Add 1 cup of white vinegar and allow it to work for about 30 minutes.
- Then pour the boiling water (approximately 3 litres) down the drain, taking care not to scald ourselves.
- Hot water will help to drag dirt, lime scale and or other waste out of the drain that has not been cleaned away by the vinegar and baking powder.
