How to clean artificial plants efficiently
Artificial plants are a wonderful solution to give a more natural touch to our homes. In fact, they are sometimes so realistic that we can hardly tell the difference. Nevertheless, to make sure they stay looking nice, they require some care.

Artificial plants also need some minimum upkeep.
Artificial plants need regular cleaning to remove the dust that they attract. In order to clean them efficiently, without damaging them, we should wipe the leaves with a cloth moistened in a soapy solution, followed by rinsing.
You can also put them under the tap in the sink, or even in the bathtub if they are very big plants, and then allow them to dry on their own.
If there is grease or fat on the artificial plant or it has acquired bad smells from the kitchen, you can clean it with a mixture of water and white wine vinegar.
How to clean fabric artificial flowers and plants without damaging them
You can put cloth plants in a bag with a couple of tablespoons of coarse salt. Close the bag and shake it for a few seconds to draw off the dust and dirt.
You can use:
- Feather duster: as it is smooth and will not damage the leaves or petals. Furthermore, you will be able to clean the difficult to reach places.
- Hairdryer: set it to medium temperature and use it to blow dust from the petals and leaves. This will help get rid of any dust and dirt that has built up.
- Soft cloth: moisten the cloth slightly with warm water and gently clean the leaves and petals. Do not use too much water, as this can damage the flowers.
- Water spray: using a spray bottle, fill it with warm water and gently spray it over the petals and leaves. Clean off any excess water using a soft cloth and allow the flowers to dry before putting them back in place. Avoid spraying water on the fabric parts of the flowers, as it could damage them.
- White vinegar: this is a very effective natural cleaning product to clean artificial flowers. Mix one part white vinegar and two parts warm water. Then take a soft sponge to clean the leaves and petals. Be sure to avoid wetting the fabric parts of the plant.
Additional tips:
- Avoid placing artificial flowers in sunny places, as direct sunlight can damage them over time.
- Do not place them in damp areas either, as humidity can cause stains and mould to form.
- If your artificial plants have fabric parts, make sure you dust those parts regularly using a feather duster or soft cloth. You can also clean them with soapy water and allow them to dry out completely before replacing them.
Spray for cleaning artificial plants: Is it actually effective?
The original colour of artificial plants can fade over time. This can be due to different factors, such as dust, direct sunlight or simply ageing. There is an easy solution to return the plants to their original green colour.
We recommend treating plants with a cleaning spray specially designed for artificial plants. This spray helps to remove dust and dirt that build up on the plant and can darken its colour. After cleaning the plant with the spray and allowing it to completely dry, it will have recovered its fresh, lively appearance again.
There are other sprays that contain UV protection to make sure your artificial plants keep their colour after being exposed to direct sunlight. Those sprays protect the plant from the harmful UV rays that fade their colour over time. We should always follow the instructions and allow the plant to dry well. We also recommend repeating this process regularly if your artificial plant is always exposed to direct sunlight.
There are other homemade methods that also work well: such as using alcohol. You will need to mix equal parts of water and isopropyl alcohol (used in cleaning products). Since only a small amount is sufficient, you will be able to clean several plants with the mixture. You will notice how they recover their shine.
