We teach you how to clean your dog's urine so your home smells nice again and you can enjoy sanitised and disinfected floors.

The most important thing when it comes to getting rid of urine stains and the odour that this can leave in our home, is to teach our pets not to urinate in the house. But, accidents are inevitable from time to time, so we’re going to look at the best way of cleaning this type of stain and, above all, the best way of removing the unpleasant odour of urine.

How do I clean my dog's urine effectively?

To clean urine stains from our dog effectively, the best thing to do is remove it as soon as possible and prevent it from filtering into the flooring of our home.

The first thing to do is wear gloves, since dog urine contains lots of bacteria. And you should wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning as well.

You can use any specialised product on the market, but the most important thing in this case is to know which ones not to use, rather than those you can.

For example, you won’t use ammonia-based cleaners or bleach, since dog’s urine contains ammonia. Therefore, if you clean the area with this type of product, you are inviting your pet to urinate there again.

How do I remove the smell of dog urine?

The most effective cleaners for cleaning the smell of dog urine are enzyme household cleaners, since they can neutralise smells as well as disinfect. With the benefit being able to use them on floors, walls and fabrics: rugs, sofa covers or cushion covers.

There are products on the market at the moment that are specifically aimed at removing the smell of urine from our dogs, but if you need this type of product and don’t have it to hand, you can use other products you are likely to have at home anyway.

  • Firstly, identify the area where your pet has urinated. Try to soak up the urine with kitchen paper or bed pad.
  • Use one mop just for cleaning this area. When the area is clean and dry, you can disinfect it and remove the odours.
  • You can opt for various homemade cleaners:
  • Vinegar: Mix 1 part hot water and 1 part vinegar in a spray bottle. Apply it to the area and leave to activate for approx. 20 minutes.
  • Bicarbonate of soda. Only use it when you know your pet isn’t around because it can be harmful to their health. Sprinkle directly onto the dry surface and leave to activate overnight. Remove it the next day with a vacuum cleaner. You can also mix 2 spoonfuls of bicarbonate of soda with 150 ml of vinegar and leave to work for half an hour.
  • Oxygenated water. Mix neutral soap with oxygenated water in a spray bottle. Spray the area to be treated and scrub with a microfibre cloth to remove the residue. Once you have scrubbed it properly, use a damp cloth from the mixture you made and clean the area again.
