Natural stone is a durable material that confers a touch of elegance anywhere around the home, although it is porous and is more sensitive to some chemicals than other materials. We are going to explain how to clean it effectively using vinegar, and what precautions we should take during the process.
Using vinegar to clean granite: Is it safe?
Before moving on to discuss the cleaning process in depth, we need to understand that vinegar is not suitable for all types of natural stone because of its acidity. Materials such as marble, limestone and travertine are particularly sensitive to vinegar because the acids can react with the minerals, causing corrosion and permanent staining.
If you have more resistant natural stone such as granite or slate, vinegar can be safe providing that it is used properly and in moderation. We therefore recommend always testing it on a small, hidden area before applying vinegar to the bigger, more visible area.
How to clean outdoor natural stone with vinegar
- White vinegar (diluted 50/50 in water).
- Warm water.
- A microfibre cleaning cloth or soft sponge.
- A basin.
- A clean towel.
- Make sure you know what type of natural stone it is before using vinegar. If it is marble, limestone or travertine, avoid using vinegar at all costs. Use a pH neutral cleaning product instead. Diluted vinegar is safe to use on harder stone such as granite or slate.
- Dilute the vinegar: mix one part white vinegar with five parts warm water. Dissolving it is essential to reduce the acidity of the vinegar, thereby minimising the risk of damage to the stone.
- Test a small, out of sight area: apply the diluted mixture in a corner or other hidden area of the stone surface. Wait a few minutes to check that it does not discolour, stain or corrode. If you do notice a change, stop using the vinegar.
- Gentle cleaning: spray the solution over the surface or apply it with a soft sponge. Gently clean the stone using circular movements. Avoid scrubbing it hard so as not to damage the protective layer of the stone.
- Do not leave the solution on the surface for more than a few minutes.
- Rinse immediately: use some clean, warm water to rinse the surface, making sure that you get rid of all the vinegar. This is important to avoid any possible corrosion.
- Drying. Dry the surface immediately afterwards using a clean, dry towel to avoid water marks and to keep the natural sheen of the stone.
Household tips for cleaning white stone
- Use a stone sealer: applying some sealant to the natural stone can protect it from stains and damage. Re-apply the sealant as often as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Avoid frequent use of vinegar: although diluted vinegar can be useful occasionally, it should not be used as your regular cleaning product for natural stone, since over time it can end up damaging the finish.
- Choose pH neutral cleaners: for regular maintenance, choose products that are specifically designed for natural stone.
