Suitcases are faithful companions on our adventures, whether they are business trips, vacations or weekend getaways. However, after frequent use, they can accumulate dirt, stains, and odours. Keeping your suitcase clean not only prolongs its useful life, but also ensures that you are organized on your travels. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to properly clean your suitcase.

Necessary materials

6 steps to clean a suitcase

1. Empty and disassemble the suitcase

•    Remove all items from the inside, including pockets and compartments.
•    Disassemble items that are detachable: If your suitcase has a removable liner or other removable components, remove them to make cleaning easier.

2. Cleaning the interior

•    Vacuuming: use the vacuum cleaner to remove dust and crumbs from all corners and crevices in the interior.
•    Cleaning stains: mix lukewarm water and gentle soap. Dip a microfibre cloth in the solution and gently rub the stained areas. For stubborn stains, use a soft brush.
•    Removing odours: sprinkle bicarbonate of soda inside the suitcase and leave it for a few hours, or, preferably, overnight. Then, vacuum the bicarbonate of soda.

3. Cleaning the outside

•    General cleaning: depending on the suitcase material (fabric, leather, polycarbonate, etc.), you can use a microfibre cloth dipped in soap and water to clean the outside. Use very little moisture on leather areas.
•    Stubborn stains: for stubborn stains, you can use a mixture of white vinegar and water in equal parts. Apply with a cloth and rub gently.
•    Wheels and handle: Clean the wheels and telescopic handle with a cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol. This helps remove dirt and germs.

4. Drying

•    Open the suitcase and leave it to dry in a well-ventilated place. Make sure that is completely dry before storing it to prevent mould and odours.

5. Regular maintenance

•    Periodic cleaning: do light cleaning after each trip. This includes vacuuming the inside and cleaning any visible dirt on the outside.

6. Proper storage: keep your suitcase in a dry place and away from direct sunlight to help prevent the material from deteriorating.

Extra tips

  • Protective cover: Consider using a protective luggage cover when traveling. This can help minimize dirt and wear.
  • Deodorant pouches: Place dry tea bags inside the suitcase when you're not using it to keep it odour-free.

By following these steps, you ensure your suitcase is always ready for the next trip as well as extending its useful life. Bon voyage!
