How to clean handbags according to the material

1. Empty your handbag and shake it out

Before starting, remove everything from inside your bag: purse, papers, cosmetics... Then turn it upside down and shake it to get rid of any crumbs, dust or other small remains. If it has a lining, turn it inside out carefully for easier access.

2. Vacuum clean the inside

Use a vacuum cleaner with a small nozzle to get rid of the smaller dirt particles. Do it gently so as not to damage the material.

3. Cleaning according to the material

  • Fabric: mix some warm water with a few drops of neutral soap. Moisten a cloth and gently wipe the inside. Allow it to air dry.
  • Leather: never use water in excess. Use a slightly damp cloth and special leather cleaning products. Apply some conditioner afterwards to keep it supple. More details, here.
  • Synthetic: you can use alcohol-free wipes or a mixture of mild soap and water.
  • Suede or shammy leather: avoid liquids. Use a special brush for suede and if your bag is stained, use specific dry-cleaning products.

Easy tips to get rid of stains and dirt

  • Makeup stains: sprinkle some baking powder on the stain, allow it to work for a few minutes and then wipe it off with a dry cloth.
  • Unpleasant smells: place some sachets of baking powder or active carbon inside the bag for a few hours.
  • Ink stains: apply some isopropyl alcohol with a cotton bud. Always test it first on an area that is out of sight.

Recommended products

  • Neutral soap or special soap for leather.
  • Microfibre cleaning cloths.
  • Suede brush.
  • Anti-humidity sachets or baking powder to get rid of smells.

Common mistakes when cleaning handbags and how to avoid them

  • Using too much water: this can make the bag lose its shape and damage the lining.
  • Applying aggressive products: avoid bleach, pure alcohol or strong detergents.
  • Not testing it on an out-of-site part: always test the product to make sure it does not damage the material.
  • Drying with direct heat: never use a hairdryer or leave your bag out in the sun. Allow it to dry naturally.
