The toothbrush is a basic tool for keeping your smile healthy and radiant. However, we often ignore a crucial aspect: proper cleaning of the toothbrush itself. The buildup of bacteria, remains of toothpaste and food can turn your toothbrush into a breeding ground for unwanted germs. Here is some simple but effective advice to make sure that your toothbrush is always clean and ready for use.
- Rinsing
Always rinse your toothbrush well with hot water after brushing your teeth in order to remove any remains of toothpaste or food. This helps prevent the buildup of bacteria and other microorganisms. Don’t forget to gently shake off any excess water after rinsing. This will help dry the toothbrush faster and prevent the growth of bacteria in a humid environment.
- Storage
Store your toothbrush in a vertical position on the support designed to allow it to dry completely between uses. Do not store several brushes together in one recipient, as this could foment the transfer of bacteria between them.
- Disinfecting
Once a week, dip the bristles of your toothbrush in disinfectant mouthwash for a few minutes to kill any bacteria. Make sure to rinse the brush well after disinfecting to remove all the solution.
- Replacing
Change your toothbrush every three months or sooner, if the bristles are worn or deformed. A worn toothbrush does not clean your teeth effectively and it may be less hygienic.
- Cleaning
Do a more thorough cleaning of your toothbrush once a month. Steep your toothbrush in hot water and white vinegar for 30 minutes to remove any buildup of tartar or stains. Then, rinse the brush well and leave it to dry. Keep the bathroom clean and tidy to prevent cross-contamination. Remember to clean the brush holder regularly as well as other bathroom accessories to avoid the buildup of dirt.
How to clean an electric toothbrush
In the case of an electric toothbrush, only one further step needs to be added to the previous 5. Before starting any cleaning process, make sure to disconnect the toothbrush from its power source. Then disassemble the parts of the toothbrush according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Generally, this implies removing the toothbrush head and any additional accessory, as bristle protectors or covers.
