How to clean gold and steel fashion jewellery?

  • Prepare a water and soap mixture: fill a bowl with some warm water and add a few drops of mild soap. Mix it well using your hands to make sure the soap dissolves and lathers a little.

  • Clean the steel first: before cleaning it with soap, clean any dust from the jewellery using a dry microfibre cleaning cloth. This will help to prevent any dirt from sticking to the steel during the cleaning process.

  • Soak your jewellery: allow the soap to work for at least 10 minutes to loosen off any dirt. You will see how some stains will disappear after a while.

  • Brush: use a brush to get rid of more stubborn stains. Scrub gently and pay special attention to any etchings, as this is where dirt tends to build up.

  • Rinse: rinse all the jewellery well in warm water to get rid of any dirt and soap remains.

  • Dry: use a microfibre cloth to dry the items well, thereby avoiding any lime scale stains or other residue that could be left behind by the water when it dries.

How to clean tarnished fashion jewellery?

Fashion jewellery tends to lose its colour and shine over time, and takes on a greenish or blackish colour. If you have rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces like that, there are several tips to clean them and restore their natural shine. The properties of baking powder make it an indispensable product to keep around the home.

Mix 1 spoonful of baking powder and half a spoonful of toothpaste in a receptacle with warm water. Use a brush to scrub your jewellery until it is completely clean. Another tip is to mix half a glass of white vinegar with 2 spoonfuls of baking powder in a receptacle and leave your jewellery in it for 2 to 3 hours. Then rinse it well and dry it properly.

How to prevent fashion jewellery from tarnishing?

  • Clear nail varnish: this is a very simple and practical tip to increase the life of your fashion jewellery. Apply a coat of nail varnish to give shine to your jewellery. This will protect them from exposure to external agents and extend their life.

  • Do not mix accessories: it is best to keep all your jewellery separate. For example, you could buy a jewellery rack and store them on it.

  • Never keep gold and silver fine jewellery in contact with fashion jewellery to prevent them from damaging each other.

  • When you are going to wear them, make sure they do not come into contact with perfume, cream, soap, water or other similar agents.

  • Avoid swimming in the pool or sea when wearing them, unless of course, they are made from stainless steel.

How to clean silver fashion jewellery?

  • Using baking powder and tinfoil, the latter to line a receptacle (shiny side up), before placing the jewellery inside and then sprinkling the baking powder over it and hot water after, making sure the pieces of jewellery are completely submerged. This leads to a chemical reaction that removes the tarnish from silver. Leave it to work for a few minutes and then rinse the jewellery in warm water and dry it with a soft cloth.

  • Using white vinegar (distilled vinegar if possible) and a receptacle, leaving the pieces of jewellery for three minutes at the most and rinsing them off afterwards.

  • Using baking powder and water paste: for a less aggressive way to clean your more delicate pieces of jewellery. The paste can be made by mixing baking powder and water to make a thick mixture. We then apply it to the silver using a soft cloth or toothbrush, gently rubbing the tarnished areas. Rinse well in warm water afterwards and dry the pieces with a soft cloth.
