We are going to give you the best tips to get rid of fruit flies from your home and the greater peace of mind that comes with it. Don’t miss out.

There is nothing worse than a swarm of insects in your home, whether they are ants, moths or others, but if they are flies, and on top of that they are fluttering about the fruit, it is particularly unpleasant and we need to get rid of them as soon as we can. But, how do we do it? Where do they come from? How do they get inside? I am sure that you have asked yourself those questions at some point, and that you have had to store the fruit in the pantry where there is less ventilation, or in the fridge where the fruit loses some of its flavour.

How to get rid of fruit flies?

The first thing we should do is to avoid keeping things in the kitchen that attract flies, just as we saw in the article how to get rid of ants from the home.

  • We should avoid leaving dirty plates and dishes in the sink.
  • Be careful with food waste in the bin. Make sure the lid is always tightly closed.
  • We should also be particularly careful with overripe or rotten fruit. We should sort through the fruit and remove any overripe or rotten fruit.
  • We should be careful with apples, since they tend to help other fruit to ripen earlier.
  • We should always keep the countertops clean and dry. We should not leave spilled liquids without cleaning them, or any products containing alcohol.
  • To avoid attracting insects, particularly flies, we could always find a fruit bowl with a mesh or mosquito net lid so that the air can circulate around the fruit without allowing flies in.
  • We should change the kitchen cleaning cloth and scouring pad regularly, because if these items are dirty, they do attract flies to any food remains on them.

Best insecticides for fruit flies

There are many different products on the market today to get rid of insects. We need to be careful to make sure those substances do not come into contact with our food, as they can be harmful. If they do though, we should wash our fruit well before eating it.

Nevertheless, there are also some homemade remedies that we could try and then choose the one that works best, such as aromatic plants like basil or citronella to keep insects in general away.

We could also make a homemade insect trap using a receptacle containing cleaning vinegar, washing-up liquid, a little baking soda, some bay leaves and half a lemon with some cloves stuck in it. Cover the bowl containing the mixture with cling film and pierce some small holes to let the smell out to attract the insects and to allow them to enter and get trapped.
