What is highlighter?
Highlighter is a term we have been hearing about for a long time now in the world of makeup. Ever since the Hollywood days of cinema we have wanted to give more “shine” to our skin with makeup. But “highlighter” as such is relatively new in the world of makeup.
Highlighter is the product that creates light to achieve a fresher looking face and it emphasises our features, leaving a glamorous, sophisticated feminine look.
It comes in the form of liquids, powder, cream, sticks, etc., and just as many shades as there are types of skin, some in brighter colours and others in paler colours. Most of them contain mother-of-pearl powder, of synthetic or mineral origins whose base is mica.

Where do we apply highlighter?
As its name suggests, this product gives more light to our face and a perfectly hydrated effect to our skin, which is very important for different parts of our face where we want an extra “glowy” touch.
- The first thing we need to know is that highlighter should always be applied after our other makeup, and never before. We can apply it using a brush or our fingers, depending on the texture we choose, but always dabbing it on and taking great care not to smudge the makeup foundation. It should be well blended in.
- If we use liquid highlighter, we can also put a few drops in our moisturising cream for a brighter effect.
- Powder highlighter is the most popular and is easiest to use.

As for where to apply it:
- We should apply it to the upper part of our cheekbones. We should use a brush to apply it in this area, and spread it up to our temples.
- We can also apply it over the arch over our eyebrows, dabbing it on gently with our fingertips or a small brush.
- The inner corner of our eyes is one of the best places to apply highlighter, since that is where it will give you an extra bit of light to your look. Apply highlighter very subtly to the bags under your eyes, and always on top of the corrector. There are many products on the market today that feature the benefits of corrector and highlighter in a single product. In these two areas, always apply it using your finger tips for a more natural finish.
- We should then apply a little highlighter very gently just along our nose line.
- Finally, we should apply a little to our Cupid’s bow, that little gap just above the middle of our top lip. This will give our mouth more volume.
