Toning shampoo: What does it do?
Purple or blue toning shampoo serves to neutralise or enhance the colour of blonde hair or highlights. We’re going to tell you how and when to use it.
What is toning shampoo?
It is a chemical product for washing your hair containing specific pigment additives that help neutralise worn or faded colours in dyed hair. oning shampoo contains ingredients that strengthen dyed hair.
Furthermore, it confers softness and shine to your hair. It helps to keep the original colour and shine of your hair for longer, and correct any unwanted highlights that can appear after dying your hair or with time. It also enhances the colour of our hair and maintains it for longer with the desired colour and shine. Toning shampoo is recommended for ginger, copper, white and red hair, and of course for blonde and highlighted hair.

Toning shampoo can be used to maintain fully dyed hair, flecks and small highlights. The benefits of this shampoo are:
- It restores the shine.
- It saves time and money at the hairdresser's.
- It neutralises unwanted colours.
- It extends the life of the dye.
- It enhances the colour.
How do we use it?
It should only be used on dyed and grey hair. There are several types of toning shampoos depending on the colour of the dye we have used:
- Purple: containing violet pigments to set off any yellowing of light, dyed hair. It can also be applied to white hair so that it does not yellow over time and its pure white colour is maintained. It also gives shine to grey hair and softens it, leading to a shiny, silvery tone.
- Blue: this eliminates any orangey or coppery shades.
- Yellow: ideal for women with very light hair.
- Red: this avoids your colour turning purple.
- Brown: confers beige tones to your hair, and even hazel shades.
Each toning shampoo has its own directions for use. Therefore, pay attention and read the instructions on the label carefully. Secondly, bear in mind that you should wash your hair with your usual shampoo first. Steps to follow:
- Wet your hair.
- Apply the shampoo evenly all over your hair.
- Leave it to work for between 3 to 10 minutes (each shampoo requires different times). Warning! Do not leave the shampoo on for longer than stipulated on the label as you may end up with an unwanted colour.
- Rinse your hair.
- Apply a nourishing conditioner of the same brand as the toning shampoo for the best results.
- Rinse your hair again and then dry it.

How long should we use it?
Applying toning shampoo is very similar to ordinary shampoo. The only difference is that it adds colour and an incredible shine to your hair. You must keep to the indicated time because if you leave it on for longer your hair may end up blue or violet.
Do not expect to see results after the first wash, it doesn’t work like that. You will notice the effects after several washes, but you shouldn’t use it every day. We recommend using it once a week or every ten days.
Toning shampoo should not change the colour of your hair. Its main function is to neutralise and eliminate any unwanted colours in your hair which appear over time. Nevertheless, if your hair is very dry and porous, you should not use toning shampoo because the pigments will penetrate more easily and deeper and may change the colour of your highlights.

A table is shown as follows with the best toning shampoo depending on the dye:
- Blonde: Blonde toner with violet pigment.
