When it comes to choosing one foundation or another, one of the main mistakes is to be exclusively guided by it being the right shade, forgetting all about our skin type. And it is, precisely, our skin type that will determine the finish of the foundation we choose.

A poor choice can lead to shine or a cracking effect and, in the long run, to poor skin care. Determining our skin type is the previous step to finishing, coverage and tone.

Discover the best makeup foundations.

1. Dry skin

  • These are skins that look dull, even flaky. They need extra moisture and luminosity.

  • Try liquid and moisturising foundations. The first component that must appear on the label must be water. It is also interesting for it to have moisturising ingredients, such as glycerine or lanolin.

  • Cream makeup is also a good option for dry skin. In general, these products provide extra benefits such as hydration or a specific treatment, such as, for instance, reducing blemishes.

  • If you want to prevent your skin from looking chapped, the coverage should be light.

2. Mixed skin

  • This type of skin is greasy in the T-zone (forehead and nose) and chin, and dry on the cheeks. It is among one of the most complicated types to deal with as the actions required differ.

  • It is advisable to choose a foundation with a specific regulating treatment that can adapt better to the needs of each area, or choose a moisturising makeup, and work on the greasiest area independently, with matting products such as powder.

  • This type of skin is decisively influenced by our daily routine and care before applying makeup, which should always be moisturising for the face in general, and balancing for the problem areas.

3. Greasy skin

  • This type of skin looks too shiny and has very open pores.

  • An oil-free matt foundation is the best option, as this will prevent the pores from becoming clogged and generating more grease. If it contains agents to regulate the secretion of sebum and hide the pores, even better.

  • If there are blemishes or acne marks, it is also advisable for it to have high coverage. A good option is the stick format: it can be applied with a brush for a lighter effect or with a sponge for a more covering finish.

  • If there are no irregularities, mousse foundation is a good alternative. This is characterised by its airy texture and powdered finish.

4. Sensitive skin

If you have sensitive skin or rosacea, look for high tolerance, hypoallergenic, alcohol and fragrance free formulas. Green concealers are recommended to camouflage redness.
