Quality employment

As a company that values talent and constantly strives to improve working practices, in 2021 Consum was once again awarded - for the ninth consecutive year - the Top Employerscertificate, distinguishing it as one of the best companies to work for in Spain.

In 2021, a total of 826 net new jobs were created compared to the previous year. At the end of the year, Consum's total workforce consisted of 18,212 people. 83% of workers have a full-time contract and 94% of people who work at Consum have a stable job with a partner agreement or indefinite contract.

Training and promotion

Training is essential to develop the workers' skills and help them to acquire new ones, along with the competencies required in the future. Consum invested 8.2 million euros, equivalent to 450.89 euros per worker. In 2021, workers completed an average of 38.16 hours of training.

Through the Consum People App, workers enter a virtual classroom called “Consum Campus”, where they can access a large catalogue of online courses. These can be carried out flexibly and adapted to each individual's schedules.

To cover the Cooperative's talent needs for the next few years, Consum implemented a new internal promotion model through the Potential Development Plan, which ensures all positions are first offered to existing personnel through a proactive strategy. In 2021, 401 workers were promoted - 256 women and 145 men. That is, almost 2 out of 3 people promoted in 2021 in Consum were women.

Equal opportunities

Consum's third Equality Plan 2018-2022 includes a series of measures and commitments to effectively and realistically incorporate the gender perspective at all levels of the organisation. 61% of store management positions are already held by women. For all these reasons, Consum is part of the network of companies holding the Equality in Business Badge from the Ministry of Equality, reaffirming the Cooperative's commitment to effective equality between men and women.

During the summer campaign, 5 people with Down's Syndrome joined the staff, through the Asindown Foundation. In addition, Consum has an agreement with the ONCE Foundation as part of the Inserta programme, covering the incorporation into the workforce of 30 people with disabilities. For more than a decade, it has had an agreement with the Red Cross to support people who experience greater difficulties in accessing the labour market.

Work-life balance

Consum has a catalogue entitled “More than 75 Measures for Reconciliation”, detailing initiatives aimed at guaranteeing the balance between the professional and personal lives of its workers, and to which new measures or improvements are added every year. In 2021, it invested 28.3 million euros in work/life balance measures in 2021, which amounts to a total of 1,556 euros per worker.

In 2021, the Cooperative implemented the 5-day work week in 100 supermarkets. In this way, the staff can enjoy two rest days per week, a measure that was already in place for the workers of the logistics plants.

Since 2007, Consum is the only company in its sector to hold the EFR seal denoting a Family Responsible Company, with a particular qualification of Excellence, promoted by the Másfamilia Foundation and endorsed by the Ministry of Equality.
