Most common types of insect bites in children

The most common bites in children, regardless of whether we frequent rural or urban areas, are usually mosquitoes, fleas, bees and wasps. Each has specific characteristics such as redness, inflammation or localised pain. As the temperature increases, especially in spring and summer, these insects are more prevalent, since heat and humidity favour their reproduction.

How to identify insect bites

Noting the shape, colour and size of an insect bite can allow us to distinguish its origin. Here is how to identify the different types of bites:

  • Bee: Only stings once, but with immediate and intense pain, visible bite and localised swelling.
  • Mosquito: A round and elevated bump, with a lot of itching, and the bites are usually isolated.
  • Wasp: Can sting several times with severe pain, more extensive inflammation and no visible stinger.
  • Flea: a few small red dots, usually in groups or in a line of 3-4 bites, with intense and frequent itching on ankles and legs.

How to prevent insect bites in children

Using age-appropriate repellents, protective clothing and closed shoes, as well as using mosquito nets on beds and windows, can prevent most bites during insect season.

How to relieve the discomfort of bites

To reduce discomfort, it is a good idea to apply cold immediately after the bite, creams with natural ingredients with a calming effect or aloe vera. There are numerous products designed to relieve the discomfort of bites, such as post-bite gels. It is important to avoid the child scratching them, and if there is an intense reaction you should consult a professional.

If the bite starts to cause problems, it is best to go to a medical centre to have the type of bite diagnosed and the corresponding treatment administered.
