Cleaning windows is a hard, meticulous job if we want to get them properly clean. We do need to bear in mind though that this does not mean just the window panes. We also need to clean the frame, which we often forget since we don’t normally pay it much attention. Did you know that by keeping your window frames clean you can prevent heat from leaking out of your home because the windows don’t close properly because of the dirt? The tips we are going to give you will help you to keep them clean, even the corners.
How to clean aluminium window frames
Aluminium window frames are very elegant, but they are also very delicate and we need to be careful when cleaning them. Make sure the cloth will not scratch the surface and use a mixture of soap and water to wipe it. This solution will work wonders on stains and fat deposits.
To finish with, wipe the surfaces down with a different cloth. Another tip is to use vinegar which can help get rid of any fat left behind.
How to clean the corners of window frames.
Dust, dirt and other remains build up every day in the grooves and gaps that there are in window frames. Since they are small spaces, they are difficult to get to and to keep clean.
A simple way to clean them if there is only fluff, dust or loose dirt is using the vacuum cleaner with the narrowest attachment. Some of these attachments also include a brush.
The vacuum cleaner will not clean any dirt that is stuck to the guides though. For this we should use a soft toothbrush so as not to scratch the frame, whether it is metal or wood, and also cotton buds for the very smallest nooks and crannies. Here are two suggestions:
- Soap and warm water: put some warm water in a bowl and add a little washing up liquid before applying it to the guide. Clean the area using the toothbrush and some kitchen roll or a cloth to remove the bits. You can use cotton buds to get rid of the dirt in the corners.
- White vinegar and baking powder: sprinkle a couple of spoonfuls of baking soda along the guides and then pour in some vinegar so that it foams up. Leave it to work for about 5 minutes. Use a brush afterwards to clean it and then wipe out the remains of dirt with kitchen roll or a dry cloth.
Another useful tip is to mark the grooves of the window frame on the sponge side of a scouring pad and make cuts along the marks. Then wet the scouring pad in soapy water and clean the window frame easily with a custom-made cleaner to slot into the grooves and easily remove the dirt from these fiddly places.
We can also use a steam cleaner. The steam will help to remove the dirt more easily. You will only have to steam clean the corners and other dirty places and then wipe out any remains.
How to clean PVC window frames
PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, is one of the best materials currently available. Among other advantages, it is a great insulator for our homes and keeps out the cold and humidity.
Cleaning PVC window frames is a fairly simple matter providing that we use the right materials. We need to bear in mind that although it is a very long-lasting plastic, some substances and chemicals can damage it, as can abrasive products such as bleach and ammonia.
We recommend using a good quality soft cloth to moisten in hot water mixed with a little pH neutral soap. We can also use white vinegar to help with the cleaning. This will get rid of all the dirt and stains that build up on PVC window frames with rain. We should avoid using scouring pads since they can scratch the PVC.
