Although it may seem surprising, using your dishwasher every day is actually the best maintenance you can give it. Nevertheless, it is still important to keep it clean. Here’s how:

  • The first thing you should do is empty the dishwasher.
  • Clean the door and the rubber seal with a damp cloth, as these are areas where dirt can accumulate.
  • Next, remove the spray arms and filters to clean them:
    • Clean the filters with a brush and a little dishwashing detergent. This is where dirt and food residue tend to accumulate.
    • The spray arms are where the most grease tends to build up. To clean them, spray them with a degreaser and then rinse them under hot running water to remove any dirt.
  • While the spray arms and filters are removed, take the opportunity to clean the inside walls of the appliance with a cloth dampened with water and vinegar.
  • Then put the spray arms and filters back in place.
  • To clean the dishwasher’s internal pipes and components, use a special liquid dishwasher cleaner and run a wash cycle at 70°C.
  • Finally, to keep your dishwasher in good condition, leave the door open for at least 30 minutes after each use to prevent moisture from building up.

Products for Cleaning Your Dishwasher

Nowadays, there are numerous products available to help keep your dishwasher clean. There are two things you should always keep in mind for proper operation: make sure the dishwasher always has rinse aid and special dishwasher salt.

You can also use a liquid dishwasher cleaner. Place it upside down in the bottom rack, following the manufacturer’s instructions, and run a wash cycle at 70°C.

You can also use other cleaning products such as vinegar and baking soda, which work very well for degreasing and disinfecting, or bleach. However, be careful with the latter, as it can be toxic. Only use bleach if mould appears inside the dishwasher or along the sides of the door.
