Body

Dogs have a layer of fat and fur that protects them from the cold. In fact, the shedding that occurs in autumn serves to prepare their coat for the cold. Even so, dogs can feel cold, and we must protect them when necessary, whether due to low temperatures or in the case of puppies or senior dogs.

How does the cold affect dogs?

The cold can affect dogs in different ways depending on their breed, coat type, age and the place they live. If the cold is prolonged and the dog is not protected, it can cause damage similar to that in humans, such as a cold, bronchitis, laryngitis or pneumonia.

When they go for a walk, the cold can cause other injuries, such as muscle strains, if their body is cold and they make sudden movements, like running or jumping. The cold also negatively affects dogs with joint problems, such as arthritis or dysplasia.

How can I tell if my dog is cold?

The most obvious symptoms that a dog is cold are usually shivering and a hunched posture, as they try to retain their body heat. We can also tell if a dog is cold if they refuse to go outside, sleep more than usual, cover their nose with a paw, show muscle stiffness, have dry skin, ears and nose, or breathe slowly.

How to protect dogs’ pads in the snow? A dog’s paw pads should be protected from both the heat of the asphalt in summer and the cold of the snow, as they can cause serious injuries. If we take the dog to the snow, the ideal is to put on dog boots, as there are many available on the market today.

If the dog is not used to them and doesn't know how to walk with them, at the very least, we should apply a specific paw pad protector or petroleum jelly and limit their time in the snow.

In addition to the paw pads, it’s important to remember that a dog who is not used to low temperatures and has short fur may feel cold. It’s essential to dress them in warm clothing, especially if they tend to roll around in the snow, something that some dogs love and thoroughly enjoy.

How to keep a dog warm in winter?

At home, adjust the temperature to ensure they don’t feel cold, just as we would for ourselves. It’s very important that the dog’s bed has blankets, both at the base and to cover them while they sleep.

In the case of elderly or very cold dogs, such as greyhounds or Chihuahuas, a dog jumper may help to maintain their body temperature. When they go for a walk and exercise, they can warm up, but if the dog shows signs of being cold, a coat could be the solution. And if it rains, a raincoat is a great ally to prevent their coat from getting soaked and to keep them from catching a cold.

Of course, their diet should also be adjusted to provide more calories, as they use them to keep warm.

And finally, something that dogs love and that keeps them warm and safe is sitting next to their human to rest. It’s a pleasure that is within reach of those who live with dogs and is a guaranteed way to keep them warm and happy.
