Time and water are the arch-enemies of taps. Whatever the taps are made of, over time they always corrode. Most taps in our homes today are chrome plated, precisely because it is a long-lasting coating, but it is also a delicate material.

We might only want to clean them or get rid of any encrusted stains from them. Whichever the case, we need to be careful and we will have to clean them without scratching the surface.

How to clean chrome taps?

Since it is a delicate material, it is important that we follow these instructions and that we don’t try out new experiments. If we damage the chrome plating on our taps, this is most likely to be irreversible.

To clean chrome taps properly, we should:

  1. Avoid aggressive chemicals such as bleach, hydrochloric acid or any other products containing caustic soda or ammonia since they will damage the surfaces. We should avoid ketones and alcohol too.
  2. Use soft cleaning cloths. We should always use microfibre cleaning cloths or cotton to clean chrome taps. If we use scouring pads or scrapers to get rid of dirt, we will scratch the chrome and it will eventually come off and tarnish.
  3. Clean taps regularly.
  4. Choose high-quality, special products for chrome.
  5. Use natural products for cleaning whenever possible, such as white vinegar or baking soda.
